Hello! New here. Old beer drinker. Here in Utah, it is a little difficult to shop for beer. State liquor store for beer over 5% ABV, grocery stores for beer less than 5% ABV. Anyway, we have a few breweries here that produce some pretty good beer. I have long been a fan of IPAs, but recently have been exploring Pilsners. I did drink Pilsners many years ago but got distracted by other styles for the last few years. I have been drinking Pilsner Urquell and Bitburger lately. I like both, but rankings of both are in the "good" range. Which makes me wonder which Pilsners would be in the excellent range? Probably not available here in Utah but would be nice to know. Regards, Jim
Welcome aboard. There is a lot to explore here. Since you mentioned Pilsners, maybe you might enjoy this thread… https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/lets-give-lagers-some-love.676377/
Hey, @tired1, welcome to the BA site. There are all kinds of lists around here, and if you click on Beers on the main menu, then Styles, you'll get this: https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/styles/ Look under Pale Lagers and you'll see Bohemian/Czech Pilsner, German Pilsner and Imperial Pilsner. Clicking on them will get you a list of the most popular beers in each style (also corelates with the most well-distributed, so odds are good that Utah gets some of them). Scan the list to see if you recognize any that are available to you. You can also click on the column header for the Avg (Rating) and scan the list down to the beers that have a significant number of ratings and see if you recognize any of them. Another way to find them is to go to the Mountain regional forum and create a new post asking members for their pilsner recommendations in the area where you live. https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/forums/mountain.50/ If you're in the SLC area, I've been to Bohemian Brewery a couple times and really enjoyed their beers. https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1949/ I don't recall if I had a pilsner while there, but they have a couple on their BA page. I know they put some beers into cans that are available at the brewery, but I don't know if they are distributed. Good luck in your quest to find the best.
Jim, I commuted to Provo/Orem for two years (2021-2023), spending months at a time there. Loved it, BTW. I frequented three different state liquor stores and learned that there are somewhat different lineups at the state-run stores. I also made some online special orders through the state system. I favor Belgians and was able to get my hands on some basic stuff to keep me happy. The local breweries were also a good news situation for me, including Epic and some of other mountain state area brewers. Seemed that one could more than limp by on what was available, but then that was easy for me to think, as I would eventually return home to Texas.
