I feel sorry for people of Utah, having to live under such puritanical laws in the first place. How many people have been prevented from going to hell by limiting it to 3.2, and do they realize that more will go to hell by raising it to 4.0? I wonder if they did a trade study on souls vs. tax revenue?
Before this thread goes too far, it is worth pointing out that the linked article is about beer sold in grocery stores. What Utah law calls "heavy beer" is sold in a variety of restaurants, hotels, clubs, airports, etc., if they have the proper license. It is also sold in state liquor stores. So, there will only be a "shortage" of 3.2% ABW beer in grocery stores during the transition. IOW, who cares? BTW, MN has a similar law regarding beer sold in grocery & convenience stores (3.2% ABW max). With Utah changing its law, I wonder how many breweries will continue to bother with 3.2 beer specifically for this segment. I imagine the "session" or low ABV market on its own will survive, however.
