I have recently become the proud owner of a 2011 bottle of Utopias. I was wondering, as a skeptic, if anyone can tell me what the cap looks like under the lid "from the brewery." There are drips of a dark sticky substance on the bottle (along threads, and on the shoulder of the bottle, see image), and I am concerned that the vendor may have perhaps refilled the bottle with another alcoholic beverage and re-capped? This bottle is sealed with a "plain gold cap" under the screw cap. Any feedback would be appreciated. I am worried that I may have been taken advantage of, but I purchased from a "real store," rather than a private sale, even if it was online.

I emailed Boston Beer Company, with no response.[IMG]

While it's not a 2011, I do have a 10th anniversary bottle that is capped with a black Samual Adams crown.

EDIT: 2012, I had two and they were both crowned the same. If I was good at pictures I'd post one for you.

Your ok, my bottle looked just like that, with the black sticky stuff and all.

taste it. Few beers are as incredible as SA Utopias. You'll know whether it's a fraud.

Edit: And as far as i know, they're all sealed with a cap underneath.

I know, but I was worried it wasn't a "plain cap" for this caliber of a purchase. Not that the cap adds anything to taste...

My 2009 is identical...minus the sticky stuff.

    I second this!

This is a 2003 Utopias that I opened on my birthday a couple of months ago, and the cap was plain just like yours.

My screw cap is the same as your photo. But was the "pop" cap also plain gold?

I have had a 2003 bottle, and it was capped just like yours. No fancy crown.

I read it, but with the photo of the removable screw cap, wanted to be sure I understood....

    Thanks!

Oh sorry for he miscommunication. Every Utopias I have ever had all have the same generic "pop top" under the screw top.

    Bout $160-180 bucks

Most places get it, but only a few bottles because of the asking price. It also lingers a bit because of the price.

If you really want one tell your favorite bottle shop to call you when they get some. The last time I saw it was at a whole foods so it shouldn't be super difficult.
