I had one in the 2006-2007 timeframe and it was horrendous. Perhaps it was not aged properly, I don't know, but it was like chunky soy sauce.

The Costco here in Port Orchard had bottles that were selling for $175.

Man, You can get one helluva bottle of Scotch for $200... My taste palate peaks at about 15-18 years... Which run in the $100 range... So yeah I could get 2 top shelf bottles of Scotch that will last me a LONG time...

Yet, I also love beer -

The Utopias I have is my "Macallan 25"... It comes out in the rarest of occasions typically with my closest friends and family... and in this case a heck of a lot cheaper...

I really do not believe Triple Bock's issues have anythiing to do with age. I had a bottle of the 1997 shortly after it first hit the shelves. I hated it. Ten years later I saw some for sale and decided to give it another try. It tasted exactly the same as I remembered and I still hated it.

Scotch is a different product, though. Do you refrain from buying a chicken sandwich because you could buy a hamburger for the same price? Sometimes you want chicken, sometimes you want a burger.

Scotch, cognac, vintage port, Utopias. They are all different products and you buy them because you like them.

Good question. There should be only one 'place' that is called Utopia, so it shouldn't be plural for that reason. And it's not likely so-named because there is more than one bottle available, because few of us can afford to buy more than one.

A nice bottle of sherry would be better, cheaper, and not terribly different.

Brother in law opened his bottle recently and shared it with me. I can see why people seek it out. Will be adding this to my list of releases to acquire (if my wife lets me spend the $$)

I don't drink Scotch, or hardly any liquor for that matter, but unless I find an overabundance of money somewhere, I would never spend that much money on one bottle of beer.
I would, with an unlimited income, seek out all the expensive beers I could find, but I'm afraid I will likely spend my days with the much more affordable, but still very good, beers that I can afford.
    Oh well, Drink up!

I don't know about it being "appropriate," but I stumbled upon a 2003 vintage recently and split some of it with about a dozen friends. We did a back to back with the Anniversary Edition and I think everyone agreed that it was drinking head and shoulders better than the 2012. The heat was much more subdued and it tasted much cleaner. No clue if the newer vintages will age similarly, but it's worth a shot if you happen to have one.
