I have an opportunity to get my hands on a 10th anniversary bottle. Should I jump at the chance or give it a miss?

I would at least try to get a tasting of it. I mean it is one of the more rare beers out there. If you don't want to go it alone see if you have any friends that would be willing to split the bill and split the bottle.

Calling it a beer is really more of a euphemism than a description. It's more like a malt-flavored liqueur. But it can be sipped like sherry or port and it's pretty good for that purpose. The question of price is significant. There are plenty of other things you can get for the same money (e.g., a full case of BCBS). YMMV

I don't think it is worth the price for a whole bottle. It is quite tasty and I think it's worth a try if given the opportunity. Sam Adams seems to pour this at a lot of tastings so if you keeps your eyes out, you will likely get a sip. I got a sample the other day at a whiskey tasting within a Scottish festival of all places.

That kind of depends on what the price tag on this opportunity is...

If you can still pay the rent, get it. Remember, there is nothing like it and this might be your only chance to enjoy the best.

It is definitely worth it if you have the money to spare. Great beer, you don't have to drink it all in one sitting, you can have multiple people over to sip it and have a good time, etc.

If you can still pay the rent, buy it. It may be your last chance to get the very best that brewing has to offer.

    It's OK, but I wouldn't pay more than $20 for a bottle.

Definitely not worth starting two threads back to back for.

After a friend of mine graciously gave me a pour of his 10th anni I will say yes, it is worth it. BUT the max I personally would drop on a bottle would be $200. Well back when I actually had a decent beer budget. So basically if you have the money do it.

IMHO not worth it, even at the "cheap" price of 170.00 it was going for here.

Drink some Macallan Cask Strength, cheaper I am certain over there than here, and toast the money you will be saving while drinking something that actually tastes epic, rather than something that has a bunch of unrealistic reviews and overblown expectations.

You don't feel ripped off drinking Utopias which is impressive given the price tag. Is it worth it? Everything is worth it once I suppose

Well said. I scored a taste at a RI beer fest last year. It's tasty stuff, but to splurge on the bottle I'd have to be a pretty wealthy dude.

Haha, really? Every beer is brewed, but not everything brewed is beer.

Since it is distilled I believe it isn't even in the top 100 of distilled malt products, unless you rank by "most overpriced, overhyped, and overpromoted"

Better topic would be, "Utopias. Beer or not?"

No, it's not. I guess if you have tons of extra money to throw around, then who cares, but even still there's plenty of other things you could buy for $200. For example, an entire case of BCBS and two bottles of EC12. At least, that's what I'd buy with it.

I almost think to make the price less stomach-turning, you need to find a bottle share and do some dividing the cost. I would love to try it, but I am just no going to pay the full price. Maybe 2oz per person at $20 in a ten person bottle share.

For the price of the Utopias I would, and do, buy one or more bottles of whisky or whiskey. If you never have Utopias, you're not missing anything.

Utopias is not distilled. It's fermented just as any other beer is.

    It's beer. Plain and simple.

It's one of the greatest things you'll ever put in your mouth. If you can afford it, do it. You don't have to drink the entire bottle at once, and it gets better with ages.

It also varies bottling to bottling. All of them are amazing, but the tenth anniversary is one of the best.
