I was in NYC last weekend and wandered into a Whole Foods off of Houston to see what was there that we could not get here in NC. I saw four (!) bottles of Sam Adams Utopias on the shelf. $250 each including tax. I had not seen a bottle of the stuff in person for about 6 or 7 years. Also, in surveying the beer landscape in NYC, I think we are in very good shape here in NC (Charlotte, in my case).
I live in Chapel Hill, and I was in the same store, and the Utopias were a big surprise to see! Way out of my price range, though. Concerning distro of standard fare shelf stuffs, only a few things in NYC or MA engendered much envy, namely Firestone Walker, Lost Abbey/Port, and then locals like Jack's Abby, some Sixpoint, some Ithaca, some NEBCO. But NC really does have it pretty good.
The guy in the store said that they had sold out of their allotment, but another store couldn't, so they got those.
