My wife and I are somewhat new to the UWS of Manhattan. We frequent the Amsterdam Ale House and George Keely's when seeking a decent beer selection but were wondering if anyone else knew of good beer bars we may have missed. Also, we cant seem to find a decent retail store in the area. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks
Living in the same area I feel your pain. Your best bet is still to head downtown for beer stores. As for bars Jacob's pickles over on 85th has some decent offerings.
Thanks buddy. Jacob's pickles isn't a bad choice, however we are on 81st and usually don't make it past Keely's when walking up Amsterdam. Funny enough, Pioneer market seems to have the best beer selection in the immediate area, which is why we go downtown for stores. Was hoping I missed a good store or two but that may not be the case.
I live right by pioneer. They have good options but a lot of their product doesnt move so be weary of what you buy. The real advantage up here are the duane reade growler bars but the taps lately have been subpar.
I live on West 76th and will say Keeley's is the best place that is really close. If you make it up to 96th and Amsterdam, Dive Bar is great, pretty good food too. Beyond this, the options are quite limited. 5 Napkin burger on Broadway in the 80s usually has some decent stuff. I tend to find myself hopping on either the B train to Grand St. and going to Top Hops (25 minutes) or taking the M79 crosstown to the UES Pony Bar. Be careful at Pioneer as they tend to have some very old bottles, and the pricing can be kind of out of wack on some bottles. The Duane Reade on 76th and Broadway tends to get some good stuff at the growler station. Ive had Brown Shugga, Sucks, Flower Power, Perpetual, etc. from there for 5.99/8.99 for 32/64oz. fills. I also noticed they have some decent bottles there including Sucks, Union Jack, Flower Power, etc.
Thanks for the heads up re: Pioneer. I will check out the DR on Broadway. I have only made it to Dive bar once - always seem to forget about the place but will have to go back. We used to go to the Amsterdam Tavern on 106th and Amsterdam pretty frequently. The selection changes pretty regularly and they get a decent amount of coveted beers, although the rotation is never out of this world.
I was just going to say this. I travelled up to this place because they had some things I wanted to try and the prices weren't inflated.
