Anybody headed to Ballast Point tomorrow? If you do head there, let us know what you thought of all the variants!
I can't be there myself so I figured I might as well attract as much attention to it as possible to help out my fellow SD BAs (since you don't have enough lines to stand in already this holiday season.) Taplist below, also being sold are event-related t-shirts and glassware. Miho Gastrotruck will be providing food. Merry Christmas SD BAs, wish I was there! 12 versions of Victory At Sea to be poured... - Pumpkin Pie Victory At Sea - Gingerbread Victory At Sea - Peppermint Victory At Sea - Oak Aged Victory At Sea - Maple Bourbon Victory At Sea - Chocolate Ghost Pepper Victory At Sea - Firkin of Toasted Coconut Victory At Sea - Firkin of Double Vanilla Bean Victory At Sea - Victory At Cereal - Peanut & Chocolate Victory At Sea - Mole Victory At Sea - Ballast Point Three Sheets Rum Barrel Aged Victory At Sea
My wife and I were planning on going at about 2-3 to meet some friends. They called and said don't even bother, it's too packed to get in. So we skipped it and went to sushi instead. After that, at about 5, I decided we should drive by and see how it looked. The crowd had thinned a bit, so we decided to go in. It was still crowded, but not nearly as bad as earlier. We tried: 3 Sheets Rum Barrel Aged, Pumpkin Pie, Gingerbread, Cinnamon Vanilla cask, Maple Bourbon, Chocolate Ghost Pepper (I didn't try this one), Chocolate Orange, and Devil's Share Whiskey Barrel Aged. And they still had the glasses available, so I got one of those
I tried 6 of them and they were all great. Most interesting was Victory at Cereal, which was dry hopped (cerealed) with Captain Crunch. I loved that one. I've always liked the Speedway variations, but I liked these more and I assume it's because Victory is a better base beer for this sort of experimentation.
Came down from LA with a few friends and tried: Toasted Coconut on cask, Double Vanilla Bean on cask, Cereal, Pumpkin Pie, Gingerbread, Maple Bourbon, Mole, Peanut Butter and Chocolate, Oak Aged, and Chocolate Ghost Pepper. Favorites were the Mole and the Cereal. The VaS glass is pretty cool, and 10 bones for 3 tasters and the glass was an excellent deal.
Cereal was bomb. Rum barrel (not nitro, nitro was bland) was delicious. Maple Bourbon was good once you let it warm a bit. It was a mad house in there. I got there at 11:30, drank my shit, and left.
Damn, looks like that put on some other variations later on in the day then? Those weren't on upon opening. Bourbon Maple and the Capt Crunch were awesome!
So, is this an annual thing? I've never heard of it until this year. Some nice incentive to spend X-mas in SD with the fam.
Wasn't there just rum oak chip on tap and rum barrel on nitro? That's all I saw. No rum barrel on tap.
Nice. Let us know what events you'll be attending so we can create threads on BA about them to ensure a proper welcome.
Yeah, they put on a few surprises. My wife was especially happy with the Chocolate Orange (but I dislike that flavor in anything).
I had the Rum Barrel Aged on tap when I got there in the evening, and it was amazing. My favorite of the lot.
Bourbon Maple and the Capt Crunch were awesome![/quote] Agree with you there. My favorites were Maple Bourbon and good ol Captain Horatio Crunch. But seriously, it was a mad house in there. You were lucky to find a place to set your drinks down.
God, I live in Canada and I would have seriously considered planning a vacation around making this event if I had know far enough in advice! For the record, I just tried V@S for the first time early this month and it's probably in my top 3 new beers for 2012...
