Been wanting to take a little day trip up there to get outta this Phx heat. I like the Prescott Brewing Co. Also found a place called the Raven Cafe which had a great tap list & fridge section. Which shop was this?

OP didn't say the clothes were his. The fact that he "spent until 4am scrubbing and washing everything" indicates they were probably his girlfriend's. Sounds like maybe he was trying to salvage more than the clothes too...

OP, next time I recommend you refer to such a mishap as a "vacation beer disaster" or use some other modifier. Far worse things happen to people on vacation all the time.

I didn't read past "my girlfriend and I flew to Arizona to visit her family." Sounds like a tragedy.

Edit-- good thing you bought two bottles, eh?! Cellar it if you want, but it's a fantastic beer fresh as well.

Bubble wrap and ziplock bags tend to mitigate disasters but a no guarantee. I tend to wrap several layers of packaging tape around the bottle opening/cap with anything that I believe might open (beer, wine, soap, local mustard). That usually takes care of any possibility of accidental opening. The greatest cause of glass breakage in luggage is not external, but two such objects coming in contact inside the suitcase. That's where bubble wrap and extra socks may come in. And if there is any leakage, a ziplock bag (but not slider lock!) will usually insure against that. An alternative is also to get a "dry bag" from a camping store and either put the bottles in it or put the clothes in it (or more than one to use as packaging).

I used to fly out of San Francisco with a case of wine. There were liquor stores at North Beach that carried full cases with styrofoam inserts that could be had for $10. It used to be possible to just put one of those as luggage, but I'm not sure if it can still be done. A greater problem today is the luggage charge -- it might be cheaper to ground ship.

TSA will unwrap your bottles, they may or may not re-wrap them. My wife bought an old milk bottle at an antique store in Maine and carefully wrapped it in bubble wrap. When we got home the bubble wrap was off, the bottle was smashed and there was a friendly TSA note indicating they had inspected the suitcase. Luckily there was no beer involved.

I have a couple of super rare KBS blends I'm working on for trade bait after they've been properly shaken and mixed with the rarest, very finest gravel I can find. Possibly some beet or turnip for starters.

Bonus -- if you ship your bottles UPS they are not going to get X-ray'd. Suitcases almost certainly will be.

I remember reading on here from a guy who wraps his bottles in disposable diapers for padding (and absorbancy!), and then in plastic bags before going in the suitcase- if I were to travel with bottles that's probably what I'd do from now on.

I had the exact same experience, only flying back from Jamaica, and it was a $90 bottle of rum. We had only purchased one, and it was a year until we made it back to Jamaica to get more. At the time, we bought two bottles, and still have one in storage.
