I tried to find an answer to my question in some of the previous threads about Italy, but couldn't quite find what I was hoping for. My wife and I plan to spend just under two weeks in Italy in September. We want to see Rome, but beyond that we're really open to other destinations. We'd like to stay in one or two other areas. With that in mind, my wife asked if there were any places in Italy that would be good beer destinations. She doesn't drink, so beer can't be the only draw. With that in mind, if you had to pick one or two cities/regions, which would best fit the bill? Thanks everyone!
Not sure about the beer scene, but Florence & the surrounding Tuscany region are fantastic. The towns of Sienna & San Gimignano are well worth visiting. September is grape harvest time, so there will be some awesome activities & events in the Tuscany region. September will be the perfect time to visit the area. Have a nice trip, Italy is fantastic, (my wife's favorite place to visit).
Tuscany in general would be a good region. You'll have the history and beauty of Florence, then you can hop a train less than hour to Pisa. Bologna (and nearby cities) is also in the region which is becoming a good Italian beer city, and is a bit of a university town, with tons of historic things to see as well. And the countryside rural areas are truly gorgeous.
In Venice I found lots of places that served beer but only 1 beer bar... then it had weird hours and never opened on the same day.
It's a bit out of the way, but there are two pretty good places in the city of Trieste: Mastri d'Arme (very close to the city center) and Mastro Birraio (which is 5-10 mins on foot from the center).
