Has anyone else run into being denied service for having a non-US driver's license as ID?

I was just on vacation in California and in general had no issues but Ballast Point would not serve me based on my Canadian driver's license, stating they would need my passport. So even though said license is allowable to the US government for driving, it would somehow not be allowable for drinking.

Any retailer can deny alcohol service for any reason. Most fake ids that come through bars are not from the US. If you look young and are dyin for some unfiltered sculpin, I suggest you keep your passport in your pocket. Retailers don't want to risk accepting an id they are not familiar with for fear of a citation.

No one has refused my Texas ID, but then they don't ask either, because I'm 65.

Oh OK, didn't realize this was a thing.

Was definitely the first I'd heard of not taking another country's ID - sometimes ID's seem sketchy if the bartender's not heard much of that country, especially if the person looks borderline too young like the first reply said, but from a neighboring G8 country? Really?

Context is that I came in at lunch with my wife & daughter, finally convinced my 4-year old to pick something to eat, selected my beers, and then when we get to order they tell me I can't use my ID. I'm almost 40 and could not possibly pass for 20.

Anyway for BA's out there, you can carry your passport (but be safe with it - don't crease it nor get it wet or you may not get back home), or visit establishments / countries that are not like this.

America's puritanical roots are alive and well, especially with regards alcohol and sex. You'd think we'd be past that by now but we are not.

this sounds like it could be a case of discrimination towards Canadians. which would be terrible

Although I will admit, I was quite embarrassed while at Alesmith on Canada Day when the canadian national anthem started and I only knew half of it. I need to watch more hockey.

Not sure of Californias laws but thats how it is here in Florida. My place is extra strict on it(Disney), but basically if you have a foreign id/license we need a passport to go along with it(although if you take a picture of your passport with your phone or print it, thats fine too, we just need the combo). Not everyone enforces it and you definitely get some lax checkers but thats technically what should be happening.

I've never had a problem in CA even with my passport card as I lost my CA driver's license a few times. But my passport card is valid for 10 years.

No you don't. Hockey's not that great. Hard to love a sport most US citizens can't grow up playing in the backyard, right?!

Typically I would agree but as a CA transplant I had that ability to play growing up. Also remember...Shaun White is an Olympic gold medal snowboarder...and he grew up in north county San Diego...where there is no snow. (I still find that funny)

Yeah but he also skateboarded and made the kind of money to go on ski trips whenever. Anyway, back to beer ha.

Very true...I still find it funny that those that deal with snow for the majority of the year can't beat a kid that only gets to see it for at most half a year and only on trips.

But yes speaking of beer and snow...I need another Snowed In b1 plz and thx.

Read an interesting interview with Shaun White a few days ago and he said he actually got to train more than most of the people living in snowier areas because the weather up at Mammoth and Big Bear was generally more conducive to getting lots of runs in every time he did get to the mountain.

To keep it beer related, that gondola at Mammoth is perfectly timed for 16 oz cans.

FWIW the only ID's that CA establishments are required to accept are CA issued Drivers Licenses/ID cards even then they have wide discretion to deny a valid ID if they "believe" it maybe fake. Many areas that have a big tourist industry generally take most out of state/country ID's. I do wonder if there was an issue where the establishment received a warning/citation for accepting a bad ID?

    Edit and US Passports.

If you get caught driving with a fake driver's license, YOU get in trouble.

If a server gets caught accepting a fake ID for beer, HE gets in trouble (fired).

If a business gets caught selling beer to minors, THEY get fined and even their license suspended.

It's just not worth the hassle to sell someone a beer.

Just to throw my 2 cents in, I live in CA and have had issues in the past trying to use my passport when I've lost my DL. I don't remember the reason I was given (I think it had to do with not having a physical description on the ID?) but I was denied at a number of places on my home turf when I had a passport (US) and not a state issued ID. It all comes down to the server I think.
