can anyone recommend a spot with good food, but also good beer, so that one could pretend like they are taking their girlfriend's friends to a good place to eat?

The federal bar in NoHo. They recently had verticals of FW BA stuff.

Boneyard Bistro. I was in there one night either last year or the year before after record shopping across the street and they silently put on Pliny the Younger without any notice or anything.

boneyard is good, i agree. if you do go for for their happy hour 4:30-6pm. 25% all draft beer. monday its 25% off all beer all day... including their library beer list!
    Their food is pricey, though.

Stout also isn't bad especially during happy hour with half off burgers and apps. Local peasant both locations are also good. Have to second Boneyard and Federal. Also Blue Dog isn't too bad sometimes they have good stuff on tap.

Boneyard Bistro is definitely good. Though both beer and food are pricey. Tipsy Cow has good beer and burgers, and can make a damn good alcoholic milkshake.

How's Barrel & Ashes? I enjoy the Tuning Fork also

Barrel and Ashes has great food but their beer list really suffers.
Tuning fork has extremely overpriced beer, IMO.
Laurel Tavern had the most bring, never rotating beer selection ever. Do not go there.
Stout usually has some good stuff. Their happy hour is the only time to go.

I was let down by Barrel & Ashes, but I haven't been in a while so I don't know if the kitchen has found its stride yet. Also, their beer cocktail (it was a Cismontane stout with Elijah Craig, lemon and honey) was...not so good.

Federal Bar was mentioned above, and they always surprise me with at least one really unexpected option on their tap list. Last time I was there I had some great crab cakes as well.

Tony's darts away in Burbank is great but it is a dive and don't have a TON of food options

Tuning Fork is my go-to for decent food and good beer selection, and usually not overcrowded except on saturdays

Went to Boneyard last night, thought it was very solid, both food- and beer-wise. Yeah, a little pricey, but quality all the way around, especially the service.
