The price talk in the bcbs thread got me thinking about this. I don't personally.find bcbs to be a terrible value and am happy to pick up 3 or 4.bottles a year because I enjoy it and have liked it very much with some age on it.

That said, mirroring the rise of over the top pricy ba stouts I have noticed an uptick in very affordable options as well. Willetized from Lagunitas seems to be the gold standard, hitting folks at around 25¢ an ounce. Locally I scored some rum ba aged Unkindness from Eel River for 4.99 for the single pint can and when I liked it so much I went back and picked up a 4 pack for 18.99, just about 30¢ an ounce. I also found 6x12 oz packs of Anderson Valley bba stout for 14.99 which is on par with willetized (which I still haven't seen yet this year)!

What are your local go tos for great ba stouts that don't break the bank?

Not local to me, but Central Waters BA stouts and barleywines are top notch and usually around $17 a 4pack.

They also have a A Scotch Ale, BBQ, BA Porters, etc. Lots of variants in rotation too. My favorite was their Bourbon Pecan Kringle Stout, hopefully not a one-off.

    Dragon's Milk (New Holland)
    KBS (Founders)
Wizard Burial Ground (Vivant) - this is a BBA Belgian Quad but IMO it's tastier than their BBA Stout
    BA Narwhal (North Coast)
    BA Ten Fidy (Oskar Blues)
    BA Expedition (Bell's)
Just off the top of my head, and ones I try to keep a few of in the cellar at all time.

A minor correction: Narwhal is a Sierra Nevada beer. Or did you mean North Coast Old Rasputin? Or both, lol. Either way, both are good beers.

On a side note, as great a deal is as Lagunitas Willettized is, remember when it first came out as High West-ified and in 6 packs for about the same price as they get for a 4 pack now? What an insanely good deal that was. Wish I had bought cases of it at that price.

Going for cost effective, for me its the Central Waters barrel aged lineup. They're all around $15 or $16 for the 4-pack, they have a pretty extensive lineup of offerings, are readily available, and taste great. Lagunitas High Westified would also fit that mold, but its only on shelves for a hot second here once a year, so I generally only grab a single 4-pack. Also, SN BA Narwhal has been pretty easy to find around here - at $17.99 a 4-pack of 16 oz cans, thats also a great value BA stout to grab.

Thanks, that's what I get for not looking.
I do have some Old Rasputin BBA but as it's in bombers only (to my knowledge) I wasn't sure whether to include it. Darn tasty, all of them. If I could get Lagunitas Willetized around here, I'm sure I would try it. Cheers!

I was also going to mention Dragon's Milk, but also Founders Backwoods Bastard. Both are typically in the $13-$15 price range per 4-pack.

I suppose it's a porter but this thread screams Barrel-Aged Victory at Sea. Such a good one at an always fair price. I miss it.

Lagunitas Willetized is a nice choice. Another option might be High West Victory at Sea but I’m not sure if it’s still produced regularly (and it’s also an imperial porter rather than a stout ). I’m guessing the Constellation sale will impact use of HW barrels/name. In any case, I found it to be a step up from Dragon’s Milk at a similar price.

A brewery from Canton OH called Royal Docks had a very interesting BA version of their Vlad the Impaler stout aged in 3 different barrels. It was 10.99 a 4pk I believe. And something like 14.5%

Anything from Founders, Bell's and Central Waters. Not just Stouts, but other dark, high ABV beers.

I had a similar revelation myself the last few weeks. I passed on my local brewery’s barrel aged offerings at $30 per 500mL bottle as well as BCBS this year. I grabbed a pack of KBS mackinac and the lagunitas willetized, for a few bucks more than 1 local banana, coconut, marshmallow blah blah blah stout. Really enjoyed the Lagunitas, and the KBS was great too.

As much as I love old Rasputin, and its a great value in its own right, the ba version is spendy. Solidly north of $20 a bottle and I don't think they're even true.bomber size. Some super nice beers, especially the rye whiskey one, but definitely an indulgence not a discount
Man lagunitas just really slays the value game. $5 bombers of their imperial Russian stout are probably equally responsible for my love.of stouts and my tolerance. Still the same price too, its amazing
