We will be in Victoria and Vancouver in August. Our favorite styles of beers are browns, ambers, esbs, porters, or anything balanced and not crazy with hops. We will be using public transportation. There are so many breweries that I could use help narrowing it down. Thanks!

http://brassneck.ca/ they have an English porter and an amber on right now. The same owner owns Alibi Room (list skews heavily to sours and IPAs) and Magnet (might have better luck there). Steel and Oak (a skytrain and walk from Vancouver) is your best bet for lagers and ambers. In general the lower mainland does not produce a lot of the styles you're looking for.

In Victoria Swans is a good bet but I haven't had their beers for a long time so can't speak to quality.

Try Spinnakers in Victoria. Oldest brewpub in Canada, really beautiful space with views of the harbour, walkable from downtown, and an excellent Nut Brown and ESB.

Also, keep and eye out for Hoyne Dark Matter on tap, will be on at most restaurants and bars around town.

    Cheers

While the styles you've listed are probably 4 of the harder ones to find in Vancouver, especially in August, you'll still find plenty of beer that isn't 'hop forward' year round here.

Check out Dageraad, Luppolo, Steel & Oak, Strange Fellows, Brassneck, Four Winds etc and I'm sure you'll find plenty of tasty beers.

To be honest, most beers made in Greater YVR aren't really all that hop crazy
