When I visited in late May I really liked Twin Sails. I follow them on Instagram and it seems they do can releases quite often of the NEIPA style. Superflux was also really good. But the locals can give you a better idea of what to go :-)

Alibi room will be your best bet to try exciting local stuff. For breweries you'll have to head a bit east or south.. storm, callister, brassneck, are some of my go tos.

Venturing further out twin sails/yellow dog/parkside/Moody ales are all within a couple of blocks of each other in port Moody. Also four winds in delta is at the top of the list

Thanks for the replies. Will have to check out the alibi room. Gastown is very walkable. Stupid question - Is beer only sold in liquor stores or can you pick some up in grocery stores?

Also, how is the selection - meaning can you find a lot of the "good stuff" on the shelves or does one need to go to the source/the brewery? In particular my buddy has me muling for him. On his trip to Vancouver 2 years ago he fell in love with Granville Island's cypress honey and he wants me to pick up a case. My wife and I will hit up the island via aqua taxi and do touristy things, but I'd rather not be toting around a case of beer.

Regardless, looks like twin sails and brassneck should be on my radar.

Only liquor stores (public or private) or at the brewery. Depending what you mean by good stuff.. some of the larger public stores have a good selection but the privates often have a wider range.

Granville island is a Molson Coors brand now. Any of their regular lineup is fairly widely distributed and you can find all over the place. No need to tote it around! http://www.bcliquorstores.com/product/684233#

Thanks @Erik-P . Very good info. My buddy was nervous I wouldn't come through for him. Not sure what his infatuation is with Cypress honey, but he has been nagging me for two years now.

Another question. Planning on taking a day trip to Squamish. If you could only pick one...howe sound or backcountry?

I'd say you should hit Farmhouse Fest July 8th but it's sold out. Check out the Facebook Page for people listing extra tickets. 180+ Farmhouse Ales and Sour beers pouring.

There is a Farmhouse Fest Brewers Party this Friday at 12Kings for FHF breweries and ciders (Bellwoods bottles are pouring among other special things). Friday at Portland Craft Modern Times has a tap takeover with 12 beers. There's an Almanac and Stillwater tap takeover Saturday evening, and a Copper & Theory thing at Tangent Cafe also Saturday (Holy Mountain, E9, Friegeist, Phriem, Commons etc) Alibi Room on Friday might also be a good idea, just saying  You picked a good weekend!

Backcountry is supposed to great right from the start. Howe Sound beers you can find anywhere in Vancouver, plus they also have a tap room on Beatty not too far from your hotel, as does Central City. Check out Chambar too, great food and beer.

Granville Island is made mostly at the Molson plant, and I would highly recommend not wasting your time hauling back a case of that. They've gone way downhill, Cypress Honey is terrible if you have any sort of 'beer nerd' in your taste buds. Call your friend crazy for me.

Darby's in Gastown has a killer tap lineup right now, lots of awesome local IPAs from Superflux, Yellow Dog, Twin Sails. The neighbourhood is somewhat sketchy but completely safe imo, never had probs. Ask for Alex if he's working he'll set you straight. You can also walk to Alibi Room quick from there.

    "Not big on wilds/sour" :flushed:

They weren't on my radar, but he "loves" them. He is transitioning from bud/miller to craft. Hey, it's his penny (er one-cent piece).

Will add Darby's on the walking circuit

Thanks for all the tips @JonnyBeers will pass on farmfest, though

I gotta admit, my trip to Vancouver beerwise was pretty ho hum. Then, I hit the Alibi Room. Had a flight of a few beers (All were exceptionally good), but the one I order multiples of was Twin Sails juice plus. Hands down the winner of all of BC in my (limited) book.

I did make fiends with a local at the alibi room. They had a bunch of special taps due to the fest I'd imagine. Anyway, I got him hooked on Cascade (even if it isn't my thing) and holy mountain.

Cantillon has been on tap at Alibi for like 2 weeks now. Hate to say it but a friend said it best

"can't trade it if it's not bottled"

Also very limited Holy Mountain, Engine 9, Almanac, and Stillwater have been on tap around town for a week+. Interesting beer market here in Van

Something something Washington no rare beer here...

and only $5 for a pour! i wish i was in vancouver, holy mountain and engine 9 are awesome but i feel maybe alot of vancouverites are not aware of the breweries in the US recently rising to fame

I think those that are aware already have their ways of sourcing it.. either trades, or driving down or what have you, so it may not be that special for them. Those that arent aware may just see it as just another beer.

Anything fun, exciting, or crazy going on this weekend that a Chicagoan Come-from-away would enjoy? I'm here until Monday morning!

    Alibi still pouring loons?

    Alibi's Menu - http://www.alibi.ca/menus-drink/

    Darby's Gastown Menu - https://www.darbysgastown.pub/menu/on-tap

Both kept very up to date. Make sure you find yourself at least a glass of the Superflux Gigantic Collab 'Pretty Much Yeah'

Loons finally kicked. You can maybe find bottles for on-site at Biercraft ($$$).

Can't think of any crazy events going on.

Bottles of the Farmhouse Fest / Four Winds collab 'Bloom' Cherry Blossom Foudre beer are around town.

Merchants (eat here!!!) and 12Kings (they have tots!) usually have cans of the more recent releases from Twin Sails for onsite

Thank you! We're gonna float down a river tomorrow so I guess I'll have to hit somewhere to grab cans. Any good, canned, available boat/float beers worth checking out?
