Yeast is a single celled fungi, not an animal. Yeast are ok for vegans to eat.

Yeast is not an animal byproduct so I don't understand this line of thinking. As a vegan, you should use Barnivore, which someone already posted, but for the most part it's pretty obvious which beers vegan's can't have - one's with milk chocolate, lactose, honey.. No more Breakfast Stout or KBS for you! Also, if you visit the UK, all Cask beers are filtered with Isinglass, so those are out too. Bottled versions usually use different veg-friendly filters though. A vast majority of beer is vegan friendly.

From some quick googling, it would seem yeast is not a reason for a vegan not to drink beer (although there are other reasons regarding certain beers - many listed above)

Also maybe because I'm hungover, but "veganism" keeps catching my eye on the beer talk main page, and I keep thinking I'm seeing something else....

Still waiting for the OP to clarify why a vegan consuming yeast is a problem... (@Aventinus88 )

If @gopens44 explanation (above) about not eating living things is the answer, then a vegan had best stop living entirely. It is literally impossible to avoid eating living things, seeing as bacteria cover essentially every surface imaginable. That leaf that fell to the ground? Covered in living bacteria (and probably wild yeast, too).

To echo what most have already said: I can't see why most beer would be a problem for vegans. They'll have to avoid some very specific beers.

Sidebar on the Kopi Luwak: Mikkeller stated that they ensure that their beans for the Beer Geek Brunch Weasel series are ethically obtained. So that's at least one brew you can enjoy guilt-free (not as a vegan, mind you, but as an animal lover).

Of course, whether or not you choose to believe them is up to you.

I'm not sure if it's a problem or not. That's why I asked.

This view of veganism is misinformed. Veganism isn't concerned with eating something that was alive (we as animals need to do this in order to survive) but rather with not consuming animal products. So eating a leaf off a tree is fine. Drinking a beer with honey or isinglass or lactose is off-limits. Eating something that contains processed sugar is questionable. Etc.

I'm intrigued - what's the sugar debate? I can see honey, but sugar has me baffled.

Quick search shows that refined sugar is processed using charcoal made from animal bones.

This, do they not eat bread too?
my wife is vegan and Im a vegetarian and the cook, probably 99% of what I cook is vegan, I have never heard of vegans not drinking beer because of yeast. Not drinking it because of isinglass, honey, or lactose I understand, but yeast??? I have many vegan friends and they all drink beer.

This site lets you look up beers, and alcohol, that are vegan, they do not bring out the pickets for yeast. I am honestly dumbfounded by this yeast crusade, where did you hear this?

Yea, and go figure, with an OP related to beer we end up talking about charred animal bones. What a world.

A compound from cow bone is actually used to filter and whiten cane sugar.

As has been mentioned multiple times, yeast is a fungus, not an animal or any kind of animal byproduct -- if you're allowed to eat mushrooms, you can also drink something that contains yeast.

Hops/malt are plant-based and yeast is a fungus, so beers containing only those ingredients would be okay for a vegan... it's when you get into additional ingredients that potential issues might come up, so I'd recommend looking into the ingredients and checking which beers are or aren't made with certain animal-derived ones first.

I mean, it's yeast, right? It's a single-cell, eukaryotic organism. True, it's more evolutionarily related to animals than bacteria (the latter not having membrane-bound organelles), but I mean, come on, it's yeast!

I could see how certain filtering agents and honey would be a problem, but not yeast. A friend of mine uses an app that tells what breweries or beers are vegan friendly, but I can't recall the name of it.
