I have a buddy going up there for the weekend and he is going to try and grab some good local beer...is there any? Wondering what sort of options he might find and where the best place to look would be? Thanks in advance.
First off, ISU represent! To answer your question though, SD is not exactly a craft beer mecca, especially vermilion. Sioux Falls gets some surly and central waters stuff from time to time, but I don't think it makes it to vermillion (I could be wrong though). I'd say Odell is probably the only decent brewery I can think of that you can't already get in Iowa... someone please set me straight if I am incorrect.
These are what popped up on SeekABrew when comparing SD to IA Alaskan, Avery, Bank, Brau Bros, Crow Peak, Dark Horse, Firehouse Grill & Brewery, Grand Teton, Horny Goat, Lucid, Odell, Salt Lake (Squatters), Tommyknocker, Wild Onion, Wooden Legs Sooo not a whole lot, depending on what you can find in Vermillion. Good luck, OP.
No surly in Sioux Falls…i promise. Verm is a craft dead zone but if you want to get any SD locals the only thing available in can/bottle is Crow Peak Brewing. Nothing impressive tho. Your best best is definitely Odell's and Deschuettes and the only decent place to buy it is at the HyVee in town.
Sioux Falls does occasionally get Surly. Within the last two years, I have had Abrasive, Damien, Furious, and Brett Liquor on tap at Monks and I have filled a growler of Bender at Taylors. It is rare and it is only kegs but Surly does make appearances in Sioux Falls. There used to be a bigger footprint. 5 years ago I had Furious on tap in Vermillion , for example.
Thanks for the update on the beer community of my home city. Those are special events and leftovers from special events they are getting rid of. Toppling Goliath went to Hunahpu Day in Tampa, FL but I wouldn't tell someone that Tampa gets Toppling Goliath stuff occasionally.
You don't need to get snarky. I am in Sioux Falls all the time and guess I have just gotten lucky (I have had Surly somewhere 3 out of the last 6 times I was there). And I know that in the past Surly was always available. I drank it multiple times at the SF Old Chicago for example.
Hyvee would be your best bet. They have a brand called Baraboo out of omaha there. An SD native beer would be Crow Peak.
