I learned today that I'll be heading to Victoria in about 2 months. I'll be staying downtown on the harbor. I'll be there for about 4 full days (ignoring my travel day in, which will be very long and late). Open to food and beverage recommendations. Particularly interested in Breakfast.

OH, and how bad is the uber trip going to be from my hotel to the airport at 3 $#%*#@ AM in the morning? The day I leave, there's only 1 flight, 6am. So, Looks like I'll be leaving hotel about 3am.

    Thanks everyone.

Well, I'm hopeful someone will have something to say in the next 2 months.

On the off-chance anyone here is a caver, trying to also coordinate 1 or 2 days of caving on a weekend somewhere in this area. Fully committed to a LOT of driving to make that happen.

There's no Uber in Victoria, BC . Cab from airport to downtown will run around $60 Canadian.

    For best breakfast: https://g.co/kgs/bypDkT

    Lots of local brews

    Thanks for the heads up.

Does no Uber mean no Uber, no Lyft, no anything with an app? I’m not against old fashioned, “TAXI!”, but using an app is certainly convenient. I’ve only used Uber, but I’d gladly use another app if the service exists up there.

I go to Winnipeg in October. I may be in Burlington, VT in June of next year. That’s probably the closest, old friend.

Awesome! Let me know for VT, we could be able to meet at Hill (I live 4 hours from there)

Check out Superflux Cabana for sure! Good food too. Amazing space. Go to The Drake (beer bar). There's all kinds of awesome coffee shops, fun to wander around. I wouldn't trust ratings on here anymore for BC Beer because they are pretty non existent for new stuff.

Obviously Driftwood Brewery is a must while you are out there. For breakfast, I recall having a great seafood egg's benedict at the James Bay Inn Restaurant. Had the smallest but incredibly flavorful shrimp. That said, it was a bit fancy.

Wasn't as good as the Lobster one on the East coast, but I enjoyed it and some decent fish and chips at Spinnakers Pub that had a great view for lunch.

In terms of beer Driftwood Brewery is certainly a must while you are there. I also enjoyed Herald Street Brewing.

Small Gods is the newest and worth checking out as it's close to the airport when you land. I'd check out Herald St, Cat 12, Ile Sauvage too

My wife and I are visiting there this weekend to eat and drink for 3 days and we've got a list. I'll try to report back with some highlights if you're interested.
The only caves I know of on the island is Horne Lake Caves but it seems touristy, might not be for major spelunkers

No ridesharing. You may be able to download a taxi app if that helps but I would just plan to walk. The weather should be nice and it's a beautiful city that is pretty small. Maybe bring a rain coat tho

Alright, it's about time that I have fully checked back into this thread.

First, I want to say thank you for all the help everyone has provided and all the comments. Very helpful.

Second, I wanted to slightly address my question about Uber/Lyft. My greatest concern is being able to easily get to/from YYJ and hotel on arrival/departure, regardless of time of day. I am very likely going to need to be at the airport on my day of departure around 3-5am (for a 6-8am departure), meaning I need to leave 30-60min before that. There are a lot of variables when you have to just "call a taxi", so I appreciate the convenience of just being able to schedule my pickup, regardless of time of day.

Third, I think I have my itinerary set. If everything goes well, my new itinerary will be to fly in on a Monday, get in late, conference from Tuesday through Friday mid-day. I'll be picking up a rental on Thursday, that way when I check out of the hotel Friday I'll be able to head up to Tahsis, where I'll be meeting someone on Saturday to go caving. Caving Sat/Sun. Then, I'll need to drive back Sun night. Get into hotel, then go drop off rental. Then get a taxi back to my hotel. Then sleep for however few hours I have, then get a taxi in the AM to the airport.

Show caves are awesome, but you're correct that I was hoping for a "more intense caving experience".

Still haven't specifically set out any places to go to yet for food/beer. That's still coming.

Any recommendations for things I might want to see on my way up to or back from Tahsis? Any suggestions on places to stay?

OH, I remember: The prices don't very much at all for getting a small truck, 1/2 truck (think F-150), midsized or full-size SUV. Any recommendations given where all I'm heading? I'm sure it doesn't matter much, but figure everyone has an opinion, so let's hear them!

Super excited for your trip! I'll be on the island for a few weeks in June, but it looks like we will not be crossing paths. Are you driving up to Tahsis? Do you know if logging roads are necessary? When I head over the west coast (near Bamfield), I hit some nice logging roads that need a bit of extra clearance. I'm sure that an F-150 would be just fine up there.

If you like vegan food, Virtuous Pie in Victoria is great. So many good options for seafood.

Definitely visit Driftwood if you have time. I look forward to hearing how the trip goes!

Also, if you have a chance to stop by Cathedral Grove (MacMillan Provincial Park) near Port Alberni, I recommend it. Consists of 800-year-old giant Douglas Fir, Grand Firs, Western Hemlocks, and Western Red Cedar trees. Pretty awesome.

    Really appreciate the recommendations.

So, I will be driving up to Tahsis. Looks like a 5-6 hour journey. Quite the haul! But, I actually enjoy scenic drives quite a bit, so I'm hoping it will all feel worth missing my wife and daughter for 2 extra days.

Yea, I asked my contact, and he bassically said whatever is fine, but "The roads around Tahsis can be quite wet and a little muddy". Not exactly the most helpful. For a variety of reasons, I'd prefer to have a "mid-size SUV". Too often when we have to rent an F-150, it won't have 4W and/or it will have bald tires. If you get a mid-size AWD SUV, the tires are usually in good condition, and it has enough of what you need. If I am going to be doing actual off-road, I will plan appropriately, but I'm just talking about for "normal" terrain.

From downtown Victoria to Tahsis you've got an almost 6hour drive of over 420 km
along Trans Canada#1 (Old Island Highway or Island Highway) until Nanaimo
then your on Highway 19 (inland) or 19A (east coast) until you reach Campbell River
(never been past Campbell River myself)
then Highway 28 until Gold River
then Head Bay Road/Tree to See Drive until you reach Tahsis

the Cumberland , Courtenay , Comox Valley area is worthy of your time if you've
got time to enjoy Beautiful BC , the Vancouver Island edition , prost :beers:

After Gold River, the road changes to unpaved, and there will be potholes and poor conditions. There will be logging trucks too, on smaller sized roads with no divider markings, so just be careful.
