Alright, I've tried digging into the regulations for bringing alcohol into the country, and I'm thoroughly confused.

First, I understand you can bring either Beer OR Wine OR Liquor but NOT more than 1. (Unless you want to pay duties.)

Second, I understand the volume limits. I'm looking to check some beer:
    • 2x 16.9oz BCBS Bottles (1x Prop, 1x Coffee)
    • 3x 16oz cans (3 types of lagers)
Third, I understand that sometimes there are different allowances based on where you enter, but had trouble finding out what these differences might be.

Fourth, I understand that you can't bring in anything with a value of more than $60 (but I think that would be Canadian, not US??????)

But, lastly, I read something weird about having to pay duties on it if I bring it THERE but don't bring it BACK? (Why the hell would I bring it but not consume it? I mean, I may not drink all of this, but I intend to drink something, otherwise I wouldn't bring it.)

So, Can someone please help me understand these rules????

I'm trying to bring some beer, because you never know how these things will go. Especially during the social events - they always overcharge for alcohol ($12 drinks for $1 beers). I'd rather just bring a beer of my own. Also, these work great as a, 'hey, we're heading back to the hotel, but let's have one more beer!' scenario. BUT, if this is going to get too damn complicated, I'm just not going to bring anything. And, definitely not if it is going to cost me.

I ENTER Canada via Calgary, AB (YYC), before catching my flight to Victoria (YYJ). When I leave, it's the reverse (YYJ --> YYC --> Minneapolis).

The regulations are complex and different from province to province and even more difficult to figure out sometimes. That said, I don’t think two bottles and three cans will present a problem anywhere you enter the country. Declare them as either yours to drink while here, or to give to friend you are meeting.

I have a friend in Buffalo who drives over with boxes of beer for me (often between 40-70 bottles and cans) and he is never stopped. He also drives back with cases, sometimes only stating an hour or two here in Canada.

This is all anecdotal of course, and not what you are looking for, but what you are planning to bring with you should not be an issue at all. A lot of the restrictions are applied to returning Canadians rather than to visitors from other countries.

I don’t have time to check now, but I will look for a link that I used to share that outlines the rules as best as I’ve seen.

I can’t find the link I used to use. It was short and relatively clear.

Because of the small amount you are bringing, maybe print off the ‘Visitors to Canada’ restrictions info on the government website. You are well under the 8.5litre limit. As long as it is checked baggage, you should fly through customs.

    Thanks, really appreciate everything.

Yea, I went ahead and brought it. I actually threw in a barleywine for good measure. So, now I have 1 more beer.

I sometimes fly with an open bottle of whiskey, but forwent it this time - not just due to choosing beer (since you can only have one), but because I wasn’t sure if they would accept it.

I’m currently in Minneapolis. My flight for Calgary doesn’t start boarding for about 3 hours. Now, I’m trying to figure out if I’ll have to retrieve my bags just to recheck them again once in Calgary before my flight to Victoria. This is only my second international flight, and last time I didn’t have a change-flight before my final destination once over the border (that was Mexico). So, this is new for me. I will have almost a 3-hour layover in Calgary, so plenty of time if I need it. But, part of this goes to how my return flight will be. Going in, I have lots of and long layovers. Returning I have 1 fewer layover and 1 of them is only about an hour. That’s the one in Calgary, which I think will have me go through customs rather than once I land. Which is fine, but a real bitch time wise is I am supposed to get my bags.

I’m going to say yes. You will need to collect them. There won’t be any customs on the flight to Victoria, so I’d assume you’ll do that when you land, collect your bags and make your way over to the next gate.

Calgary is a reasonably nice airport.

Great. My “problem” is only that I have 3 bags, one of which has only rear rollers, and two of which are very heavy (64 and 76 pounds). So, I’ll have to get a dolly.

    Thanks for the feedback.

In the event, if anyone is local (no one has said they are), let me know. I’d be happy to meet up with someone in Victoria.

Edit: I should be going to Winnipeg in October, so…this is just prep for that trip.

If you have time for a beer in the airport and see anything from Cabin or Establishment, I can recommend. Last Best is also good. Cheers and have a great trip!

I don’t think he is on very often, but there is a great BA in Winnipeg. @tbadiuk . I’ll tag him here now.

Ted has sent me some great beer from Winnipeg several times. I particularly like Kilter.

    Cheers.

In Calgary at YYC. Having a Tokyo Drift hazy IPA. Not sure who makes this. Not much info. It’s alright.

Bit late to your thread but there are plenty of good breweries in Courtenay/Comox before you hit Campbell River and catch the Gold River Hwy. Land&Sea, Gladstone, Ace Brewing and New Tradition are all solid if not necessarily groundbreaking. Land&Sea is probably the best of the bunch.

Mount Arrowsmith Brewing in Parksville has some nice brews as well. It's after Nanaimo and just before you hit Qualicum. From them I'd recommend The Sprut IPA. Honestly you're spoiled for choice for craft breweries on the Island. These days pretty much every decent sized community has a good craft brewery.

Glad to hear you liked the Kilter!

@Beer_Economicus - If you want to set up trade for anything just let me know, we can work something out via DM. When coming to Winnipeg, will you be flying or driving through ND?
