I tried a bottle of this and immediately fell in love (most-likely like everyone else). The one store said they were waiting to release it until Hop Devil was gone. I also hear that this will be year-around, giving Myrcenary a run for it's money. Anyone know what the deal is? Us in the south metro are still waiting to see it for the first time.
Picked some up at Cellars in Eagan a week or so ago. Saw it at an MGM in Bloomington too. Happy hunting!
I have never had a beer that I thought of avoiding just because of the name, but this may be my first. Dirt Wolf...seriously?
Blue Max tried getting it in, but the distributor was apparently sold-out. This beer was the closest thing to liquid marijuana that I've had yet. They nose was amazing.
DirtWolf replaces Hop Wallop in Victory's year-round line-up. The availablity ofHopDevil is unaffected by its release. That's not to say that a particular retailer is not interested in carrying more than one Victory IPA/DIPA. The name is based on the apparently mistaken belief that the etymology of the first word of Latin name for hops - Humulus lupulus - means "earth" or "dirt". As noted, Lupulus is the is the diminutive of lupus [wolf]. Even considering that that is incorrect, "EarthWolf" would certainly have been a better choice. Like others, I, too, figured I wouldn't mind the name of the beer if it tasted good. That is, until my local liquor store never got it in, and I continually had to ask if "Victory's new Double IPA" was going to ever come in. That would be replied to with "Do you know what it is called?" and I had to mutter, "DirtWolf"...and avoid the accompanying double-take and raised eyebrow of the store clerk. Reminded me of back in the 90s when the barcode of Weyerbacher's new barleywine wouldn't scan at a drug store that had a liquor license. As the line of senior citizens behind me grew longer and more annoyed at the delay, the cashier finally yelled to the manager, "Hey, I'm having trouble with this Blithering Idiot!" All the old ladies in line looked at me, shut-up and seemed to all take a step or two back.
Great beer. Funny that Blue Max couldn't get it. I've seen it at both the Cellars in Eagan and at Apple Valley Liquors.
Its complicated juggling the brands as the new Parkesburg brewery comes to life. Ranch Imperial IPA is being released next month at 9% and "based" on Liberty Bell Ringer. This is a seasonal beer. Out now is also Winter Cheers as a seasonal, an interesting take on Weissbier at 6.7%. Parkesburg is now brewing and the next big step is moving the bottling line from Dtown to Parkesburg later in Dec. Then I would expect DirtWolf production to ramp up. Its a difficult beer to produce at Downingtown due to the huge hop loads used but the larger system, centrifuge and dry hopping tanks at Parkesburg will help ease production bottlenecks. Nobody in marketing asked me but I tend to like the name too!
Its really good, i do not understand the limited availability in some areas and not others - it must have been a distributor bottleneck, i.e. 1 group got it, the others didnt. I picked some up over a week ago, had my last one last night. It was really good.
