If you can get Palate Wrecker 24/7, check the dates. It's not a year round beer.

Also Dirt Wolf is a good $2-3 cheaper per 4 pack than PW.

I appreciate your "fanhood" here. I also understand everyones argument. But I also agree wholeheartedly with the poster acknowledging that everyone has different tastes.

I could argue that Flat 12's Half Cycle is the best in the game for value and taste, but a majority of you have never had it and those that have would argue saying hell no and cite other wonderful IPA's/IIPA's out there. Which is totally understandable.

So for arguements sake this is a wonderful topic.

But also remember that we all think/taste/show our "fanhood" differently. And although we have all had great beers across the board, I think we all have our favorites that we would argue for no matter what...regardless of how others feel.

    Just my insignificant .02$

I love dirtwolf in bottles. I had Best buy 8/28 on 5/28. It was significantly less "wow" than it was just a week before. I had had the same batch (seems like the area had a ton from that batch) about 5 times, one or two a weekend. Before that I had been on a 2 month hiatus. That first sip back was 'wow'

Well...DirtWolf is not my favorite beer, it's not even in my top 5. It's not even my favorite IPA/DIPA
Saying that, I agree with your post 100 percent. I don't expect everyone to agree with my OP and I respect the fact you disagree, gave your alternative better bargain and didn't come off like some pompous snob who thinks he's better than everyone else, so....cheers. And, you're right, I've never had the beer you mentioned, hopefully one day I get to try it.

I'm glad I didn't come off snobbish as it wasn't my intention at all. So cheers right back! And I am a fan of Dirtwolf. I thoroughly have enjoyed it both times I've picked up a 4 pack.

I'm pretty sure most people outside CA can't get Drakes. Double Jack is solid, too sweet for me so I'll take Dirtwolf. Green Flash Imperial IPA is also very good, but I can't find anymore and I heard they changed it anyway. Still, for a readily available IIPA Dirtwolf is a true winner.

Fresh Hop Ranch tasted dank to me. I discussed Hop Ranch here:http://www.beeradvocate.com/communi...engali-in-may-2014.174049/page-2#post-2401404

    Cheers!

my point is that drakes is a standout over the rest of the country(:. and cali still makes great widely distributed stuff.

i agree that dirtwolf is best value and probably best quality-wise when it comes to widely released DIPAs. still, i think there's a lot of goodness in cali that isn't easily equalled elsewhere. so too with VT, though there's greatness everywhere (new england and new york blowing up all over these days).

When available, I'd argue that New Glarus Thumbprint IIPA is the definition of a steal (4 pack for $8-9, one of the best IIPAs I've ever had). All things being equal, I'd take the aforementioned before DirtWolf, but DirtWolf is a great deal as well.

As of late Dirtwolf has become very easy to get in my area. Seems whatever issues Victory was having initially are solved.

So that said, for the price, availability, and especially taste, I'd have to agree it's one of the best IIPA deals around.

I don't know the prices, but I've had the NG Thumbprint IIPA and it is fantastic. Such a well balanced an drinkable DIPA.

I personally far prefer Hoptimum to DirtWolf. I don't necessarily think it's a much better beer; I just prefer the profile. Much more pine and resin; DirtWolf has a big dose of dank sweetness courtesy of the Citra hops.

However, Hoptimum isn't year round. When it's on the shelves, it's filling my fridge. After that? Back to DirtWolf and Resin.

(Actually, in the very near future, it'll be back to Founders Double Trouble for a spell.)

Yeah, people on this site have been saying they've heard it's coming back this month (which is weird, since the next Thumbprint shouldn't be until next month). If that's true though, I know where my beer budget is going for the month!

I carry a big time west coast bias, but I have to admit, dirt wolf is pretty fantastic. Haven't yet had a beer that is clearly superior to it..

I used to say that too. At $15 a 6 pack here in Ohio. But then I did the math and it's $2.50 per bottle, just the same as DirtWolf at $10 a 4 pack.

You drainpoured a 3 month old DW? You are the epitome of a snob.

    Well here are my thoughts...

    Affordable? Check.
One of the best double IPA's there are? Not so sure. (IMO) Lagunitas Sucks is better, it should be year round by now,and it comes in Sixers!!
Easy to get for most? Not really, at least not in California even though Victory does get distributed here.
    Available year-round? Check.

I have had Victory Dirtwolf on a few occasions and I have not been that impressed by it. I had been searching for it for months and when I finally got a hold of a four pack not one of those beers was as good as I expected!! I also bought it on another occasion and it still didn't do much for me. I have not given up on this beer as I believe that perhaps the Wolfs I had were not as fresh as I would have liked so I am open to trying this one a few more times!! Perhaps people on the East Coast have the same issue with beer from the West in terms of availability and freshness.

Hardly, my man. I had already had a few beers, and it was getting late. I went to sleep rather than forcing down a beer I wasn't enjoying. I don't have such crazy high standards that I don't drink 3 month old ipas. I have a few in my fridge right now. But I can honestly say that the 3 month dirtwolf tasted like it could've easily been 6 months. Maybe I was just off that night. I dk. I guess I just don't feel the need to finish everything I open just for the sake of finishing it.
