I personally was unaware of Viking Malt until this thread.

I visited the MoreBeer website to learn:

“In 2016 Viking Malt and Danish Malting Group joined forces to better serve their customers. Now the new Viking Malt is the leading malting company in Northern Europe and supply raw materials and services to the global brewing, distilling and food industries. Viking Malt has 6 malthouses in areas where our distinctive Nordic barley is sourced: in Halmstad, Sweden; Vordingborg, Denmark; Lahti, Finland; Panevezys, Lithuania and in Sierpc and Strzegom, Poland. The annual malting capacity is close to 600 kiloton.”

Is it common for a malt producer to have so many malt houses? Is there consistency of product from all six of these malt houses?

    Cheers!

From this recent post on the AHA forum it sounds like MoreBeer just started carrying Viking Malt:

“I notice that Morebeer has recently started carrying Viking Malts (38 varieties), including no-lox versions of pilsner and pale malt. I've never heard of Viking before, but apparently they are a pretty large maltster in Europe.”

    Cheers!

I only know of it because numerous Viking malts show up in one version or another of Beersmith. And several of them have cute names, like Cookie Malt and Pale Cookie Malt and Pot Stiil Rye (?) and Delicacy Caramel Rye and Sahti malt and Smoked Pear Wood Malt. Beersmith profiles over 50 malts for this company.

I just made a beer using 100% Viking Pilsner to see if I like it but it's still in the carboy so I'll try to remember to post my results when I bottle it. I tasted it not long ago and it tasted good. "Light and clean" is how I'd put it. I also have 10 lbs of their Dark Munich but haven't used it yet. I say buy a few pounds and give it a try!

I’ve read about it on probrewer and nobody had anything bad to say about it. It’s dirt cheap, if I could get a sack of the pilsner shipped cheaper than my homebrew store I would try it out. I just got two sacks of malting company of Ireland because they were cheap and wanted to test them out. Go for it gorm.

I added some gelatin to this beer in the carboy to get rid of chill haze then remembered I needed to chill it and put it in my fermentation chamber (48F) last night. Today all of the gelatin has fallen out but I still have chill haze. I guess I should have chilled it first then added the gelatin? Or is 48F just not cold enough?

Reviving this thread to see if there are any additional likes or dislikes about Viking Pale Ale Malt.
Got an email from MoreBeer offering it for $25/sack. Add $31 shipping (to me) and it's just over $1/lb.

At that price ... I'd inquire about the crop year.

The risk seems pretty low to me. I would try it. Come to think of it, why didn't morebeer make me an offer?

Good point. A couple reviewers said their grain was past the best-by date. Some others said low efficiency.
Most folks said it was fine.

Maybe they're under the false impression you like lessbeer?
Promo code is PALESALE if you can find where to enter it.

Sent them an email. We'll see what they have to say.......

Well, I do like less beer. They should sell smaller sacks, ideal for watery session ipas.

Actually, I searched me emails for the promocode and found it. Skipped over that email because the subject line was Ferrari Electric Bottle Capper, which was nothing I need. However, it would cost me a chunk to ship.

I must have invoked user error when calculating shipping and it showed just over $31. Now it's showing $20.17 to NC; doesn’t indicate if it ships from their West or East coast facility (or maybe a wholesaler?).

    Prompt reply from MoreBeer.

"Thank you for your inquiry. Each bag of the pale malt will have a different best by date, but I believe a lot of what I've been seeing are good until December 2019. You'll have a production date and best-by date on your bag, but please note it will be in European format, which can be quite confusing (DD/MM/YYY).

At checkout, under the heading "Payment Method", in blue it will say "Redeem Gift Certificate or Promotional Code," which you'll need to click to enter the code."

I am attending HomebrewCon and I spoke to Chris Graham (President of MoreBeer) on this topic. He informed me that they recently purchased a large amount of Viking Malt for a commercial brewery but they are now experiencing 'financial difficulties' so they need to sell this product to other customers - therefore the sales promotion pricing.

I personally have no experience brewing with Viking Malt. Maybe at these prices this would be a good time to give them a try?

    Cheers!
