I live in "wine country" (Temecula, CA) so whenever we have out of towners visiting we always go wine tasting....

I prefer beer. I always mentions that we have some super decent breweries in town also to no avail.

While I love both, beer wins hands-down. Think of it this way, if you wanted to try the best wines in the world, you might have to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to do so. However, there are many BA's on this site that have had most of the Top 250.

Personally speaking, I've had many of the Top 250 and usually only spend about $150 per month on beer.

If it's not a bottle of Rhone or Spanish red I will probably take the world class beer. Few regions for wine can provide quality at the $10-15 that those two can.

Well despite some peoples best attempts I don't think the top end of beer pricing has quite reached the sheer **** womblery of wine. That said there are a huge number of perfectly reasonably priced wines that are just as enjoyable to drink with food as the better beers out there. I still prefer beer and whisky for my non food based drinking though

    each to their own

Good beer costs a fraction of the cost of good wine but I still love both. Wine with fine dining, beer when I socialise with the boys. Never has to be an either/or.

Sorry, never spending near $100 on a bottle of wine, even if I had that kind of money to squander on it...

Really, really can enjoy a good Sangiovese blend or Chianti, some rustic red Bordeaux, GSM blends, a muscular, briary Zin, and a wonderfully-flinty Chablis, as well as the occasional crisp and dry Riesling or wonderfully-sweet Sauternes.

However. 9/10 times, I'm reaching for a beer. Despite what wine people will tell you, I find a much greater variety and depth of flavor in beer, and it's much, much more accessible both from a price and sensory appreciation perspective. It soothes my spirit; it's damn near magical. However, a few times a year, when I reach for a measure of Green Chartreuse, Speyside, or a glass of vino, I certainly enjoy them and relish the opportunity.

Why can't a person love and appreciate both?

A couple points here, first are you considering fortified wines like port, sherry, Madeira, Marsala and dessert wines such as Sauternes and vin santo when comparing "depth of flavor" between wine and beer? Second, in regard to approachability both tannins in red wine and hop bitterness in some beers can be equally discouraging.

This. To say "wine is better" or vice versa is just ignorant.

What makes some wines more special than beers is that they can never be recreated. Say, for example, 2000 Cheval Blanc. No matter what the Chateau does, they will never be able to make that wine again, while Alchemist can just pop out as much Heady as they want.

Beer is more fun than wine. I can try 10 or 20+ new beers for only $100 while that $100 would buy me maybe 3 or 4 good bottles of wine if I'm lucky.

    Steak. Lobster is peasant food.

I randomly selected Kosta Browne - that costs 10-30 times more than the OP's bottle of Chimay. What would you choose any day of the week given the choice between a bottle of Kosta Browne or a bottle of Parabola and $200?

    Err... what?

I'm not really sure where I said you can't enjoy both. Personally, I love beer and I like and respect wine, but I will never choose it over beer unless there's nothing but garbage listed on a beer menu in a restaurant. This is all MY personal preference. If you (or anyone else out there) prefer wine on occasion, that's cool with me. I'm not knocking anyone else's personal preferences.

Not sure, tried lots of wine in Germany, that I enjoyed, but none near as much as the beer. Most of the stuff I liked was on the sweet side, so I'm probably just happier with the less complex wine as a rule. I get it, though, one man's Prime Rib is another's Bologna. I just would probably be thinking "how much more world-class beer I could get for that amount?" 2 kids in the house, so 100 dollar wines are just a concept on my budget right now:grimacing:
