Hey BAs, I'm going to be moving to NoVA in the next couple of months and I'm having trouble finding info on VA Growler Laws. Searches and the Google machine didnt give me a straight answer. Coming from Mass, where breweries can only fill their own glass and fill stations at shops dont exist, I have a massive pile of growlers (tree house, trillium, hill farm, wormtown, jacks abby, etc). I'm trying to see if I should just donate all my glass to my local buddies, or if places in VA / DC will fill 'foreign' growlers. DC/MD tips would be welcome, too, since I'll be exploring once I get down there. Thanks.
Most places down here will fill any growler, so long as it's a legal growler. If there are breweries here that only fill their own, I haven't heard about it yet.
Seconding this. My experience is that you can get any growler filled anywhere, as long as its a real growler and not some random container. If any place has restrictions, its a policy of the brewery/store and not law, but I haven't come across that anywhere. Welcome to the area, the Whole Foods in Fairfax is a great place for growler fills, they have about 20 different taps throughout the store and have good prices on growlers. Most of the NoVA discussion takes place in the Mid-Atlantic forum (since we are a continuous metropolitan are with DC), but staff like to move "Virginia" threads to this forum, no discretion applied.
i'll third beernuts and lillitnn, you shouldn't have any troubles getting the ones you have filled. another idea is if you have a bunch of screw tops that you don't need/want stop at Victory on your way to NOVA, and trade them in for swing tops. they have a good deal on the trade in and 1st fill.
what was said above. I've only known of 1 brewery here who said they would only fill their own branded growler but after about 2 hours of public backlash they quickly rescinded that policy to fill any legal growler. most establishments will say they will only fill a growler with the surgeons general warning, even though some ABC agents have said it's not required. that said, the establishment can make their own rules over and above ABC laws...
Echo what was already said above. Virginia is for Craft Beer Lovers as the modified state motto goes. Just about every brewery I have encountered in the state will fill any growler (16oz/32oz/64oz) regardless of where it came from. It's always safe to make sure it has the Surgeon Generals Warning but this issue is very rare. Of course there are a small few out there that may give you some trouble but all in all it's easy going here. A few local breweries around me do give a small discount ($2-$3) if you are filling one of their branded growlers and many have specials during the week on fills. A lot of great social media groups in VA as well. Look some up and they will provide you with a wealth of info of what's going on in the VA Craft Beer scene. p.s. It always helps if you bring you local brewer (and soon to be beer drinking buddies) some of those delicious NE beers so stock up!
I appreciate the input. It sounds like I'll keep a couple select ones for nostalgia and use in VA, and donate the rest to my pals up here. Do the 750ml swingtops get much love, or do places mostly go with the 1L as the 'small' one? For reference, the ones in the middle:
I've yet to come across a VA brewery that does 750ml fills. most all fill both 32oz and 64oz, but have come across a couple that do ONLY 64oz.
You'll probably have to pay for a 32 oz pour if you want to fill that 750, if they let you at all. Kind of a shame, they look awesome.
I wouldn't think anywhere that fills grunts would have an issue filling 750ml since it's about 7 ounces less - you'll probably have to pay for the 32oz pour like beernuts et. al. said but if you're fine with that I can't see why they'd care. I'd also be surprised if they made an issue of the 2L being a few ounces over the 64 ounce growler. Each place is different I suppose, but I can't imagine any of the places I've been having an issue with it.
Bring those lovely growlers filled one last time. VA BAs need to experience the awesomeness that is Tree House.
