I have a sister willing to bring me back beer when she comes home from college at VCU in virginia for the summer, but I am not totally familiar with what good local stuff is out there. Anything with distribution to the midwest (mainly MN and WI) wouldn't be necessary. Any recommendations that would be readily available on the shelves in the Richmond area that she should pick up for me? She is not really a beer expert, so hard to find stuff probably wont work either. Any suggestions would be awesome.
    Cheers

You should get her to bring back any Hardywood park stuff. Right now she should be able to get singel, hoplar, mocha Belgique and bourbon cru. The brewery is pretty close to vcu so she could get stuff directly from them. Not sure about your distribution but ballast point sculpin is also a great beer we get distributed here. What specific styles are you looking for?

Sculpin is a great beer, but I have had it before, and I think I can get it somewhere around here. Im not too picky style-wise, just trying to see if there is any real local stuff that is worth bringing back here.

If she can get down to Williamsburg Alewerks I would recommend My Bitter Valentine - DIPA and their coffee stout.

Cigar City, Williamsburg Alewerks, Blue Mountain, Devil's Backbone, Hardywood Park, Duck Rabbit, Terrapin, Port City.

Richmond gets much more "local" stuff on draft than we do in bottles/cans:

FYI - the freshest/last batch of Bitter Valentine is over a month old at this point and their Coffee Stout is from the fall. I love Alewerks but fresh is better...
the only CCB I would get right now from here would be the Maduro.
we don't get anything good from Terrapin. the W'n'B we did get is gone.
Port City makes a good Porter and Wit.
the 2 things Devils Backbone does package is just ok.
Blue Mtn sends us even less in bottles/cans (if you can find Full Nelson grab that).

Hardywood is probably going to be the best bet: she should be able to get Single, Hoplar, Mocha Belgique and Bourbon Cru directly from the brewery (thurs-sat)

St. George Porter is also worthy of picking up

I agree with what Nic said. Have her go to Hardywood and get a bottle or two of each of their brews and you won't be disappointed. I strongly dislike Belgian beers and thought the Bourbon Cru was fantastic.

She wont tell me. She is bringing it to the cabin this weekend for memorial day, so im sure I will have a few days of beer nirvana out at the end of the dock.
