Hi. I'm coming from England to Boston in September to do typical tourist things including the Redsox but want to make sure I get to grips with essentials of the beer and bar scene. Staying near Boston Common. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Mick Ratcliffe.

What are your favorite beer styles?
Good spots near Boston Common: Stoddards, The Merchant, Gingerman, Jacob Wirth, Rattlesnake, Gordons(beer store)
Good spots near Fenway Park: Lower Depths, Cornwalls, Boston Beer Works, Citizen, Yardhouse, Eastern Standard

Thanks for these. Lots to look at here. Favourite styles are IPA, sour beers and being English, various styles in cask form.

Some of your best bets for cask ale in the Boston area include Cambridge Brewing Company (currently have a very nice British style bitter on), Stoddards, Redbones, Five Horses, Cambridge Common, Olde Magouns Saloon (often has three casks on), Lower Depths and Deep Ellum.

NERAX has a map with even more cask locations - http://nerax.org/wp_nerax/real-ale/#find-cask-ale. And check the NERAX twitter feed for current updates on local casks.

    Have fun!

I'd recommend Row 34 for both sours and IPAs. It's an easy and nice walk from the Common (about 1 mile). They regularly carry killer, local(ish) IPAs (Trillium, Night Shift, MBC, Singlecut) as well as a variety of sours on draft. They have one or two casks engines, but rarely anything on cask.

I second all of the recommendations above - personal favorites are Stoddards and Cambridge Brewing Company.

You can't be in Boston and not pay a visit to Trillium's Fort Point location. Can't drink on premises but fill some growlers to go or leave with some cans. If you are into hoppy beers they will be some of the best you have ever had.

Somerville Brewing Company (Makers of Slumbrew) would love to have you visit. 4.2 miles from Fenway Park.

Lower Depths is overrated and the bartenders give craft beer a bad name.

While you are near Fenway a visit to Craft Beer Cellar is less than a block from park on Van Ness Street.
