Looks like a GREAT beer town. What bars or breweries are MUST visits? What local beers should I look for to try or buy? I have a ton of guides and lists, but I'd really value the opinions of local folks. Thanks, Sarah
For me, Pinthouse Pizza, Austin Beerworks, Draughthouse Pub are some of my favorite spots that have great beer and/or taplists. Jester King is another really popular spot to visit if you like wild/sour ales. I haven't been to Hops & Grain yet, but I do like their beers a lot. Welcome and enjoy!
No problem, wasn't trying to be short or rude, but this was the best way to give you info while I was in my car. Also, we get this question here at least once a week, and that thread is one of the better options in looking for stuff here. Enjoy your stay! Also, bring some some beer from Mass, we love out-of town beers! I'm sure you'd have no problems getting an Austin BA to do an in-person trade with you.
Breweries: Jester King. Hops and Grain. Austin Beerworks. Beer Bars: Craft Pride (must for out of towners - 54 beers of only TX stuff), Draughthouse, Bangers. Brewpubs: Black Star. Pinthouse Pizza. Whip In Beer Stores: WhichCraft. East 1st Grocery. Sunrise Mart on Anderson Ln. If you're in town on Sunday May 4th there is a bottle share at the Draughthouse (every first sunday of the month, only first sunday). That could be a great way to share your stuff and meet some Austin beer peeps! I think Treehouse, Jack's Abby, and Oxbow would go over great. People here tend to like sours best fwiw.
we're just around Monday-Friday. We can't carry beer on, can we check it in our luggage and expect it to survive?
Yea, you just have to pack it carefully. When I travel, I wrap my bottles in clothes or bubble wrap and make sure it's packed tightly and does not come into contact with the outer portion of the bag at all. If you're worried about bottles leaking/breaking, you can put them in ziploc bags first. There are a bunch of threads about checking beer on some of the other subforums, e.g. http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/checking-beer-on-a-plane-flight-baggage.49920/ seems to have some good tips.
I flew a few beers from fla to Tx in some wine shipping bags and packed in my clothing with zero issues.
Bring all the Night Shift you can. Also, Cisco sours please. Lady of the Woods is delicious. And Pechish Woods.
and if you brought a growler of any stout or porter from millys tavern.......oh gawd. but dont go crazy, ill be in nh in july
