The wife and I almost always visit the Wine Shop whenever we're in Bend. Their draft list is always more than strong enough to keep me happy, and the wine by the glass selection is plenty good enough to keep my wife happy.

@shnsajax ... Ryan (Sharpski) can correct me if I'm wrong on this (as he's the expert when it comes to all things Bend), but I'm pretty certain Broken Top is going to be your best bet for RR sours. I checked out the bottle selection when we were there a couple weeks ago, and recall seeing Consecration and Supplication (if memory serves). I should add that if you like Cascade stuff, they usually have an above average selection of their beer as well.

RR sours can be found at most bottle shops - Brew Shop or Broken Top Bottle Shop. Market of Choice, Whole Foods, and Newport Market should have some too.

The new (well, its a year old now) Market of Choice in Bend is really damn nice. They came to town ready to play.

Agreed. Nice location as well. I almost feel like we have to drop in, whenever we're in town now (as we pretty much always drive by it, coming into or leaving town).

The first few times I visited Bend with the wife, I had to work a bit at convincing her to go. Our most recent visit was just a few weeks ago, and the other day, she casually inquired as to when we might next being go up there. Mind you, this is a woman who really dislikes most beer.

Leaving for Bend in 2 days. Any events going on that I may not be aware of?

How long will you be here for?

Till Sunday. Forgot to mention just for the weekend. Just noticed there is more smoke in the area again. Thought that was gone already.

TONS of smoke. The Milli fire outside of Sisters is completely blanketing Bend in smoke and ash.

You're one weekend too soon as The Little Woody Festival on the 1st and 2nd of September. This is my favorite beer festival in Bend, hands down.

I haven't heard of any beer specific events this weekend, but the Ale Trail is always fun!

Yeah I saw that. What sucked was Little Woody was supposed to start coming to Boise last year then cancelled and no real notice or reschedule. Keep hoping it will reschedule, but doesn't look like it.

Maybe it just doesn't travel well. Portland hosted the Big Woody festival once, about 4 years ago, and it never returned. Shrug. I thought it was a good time.

I wasn't able to go to the PDX or Bend version that year, but a friend of mine at work did (was in Eugene at the time). She liked the Bend festival so much, she decided to attend the PDX version as well.

She said it was great, pretty well run and very well attended. Both of us thought for sure it would become a regular feature in PDX, and in fact I remember earmarking that weekend the next year to make sure I didn't schedule anything else. So I was very surprised that the first one turned out to be the last one.

By all accounts the Bend version has been pretty successful. Seems surprising that some organizer couldn't make it financially viable in PDX as well. Unfortunately, it seems like I always have something previously scheduled the weekend of the Bend event.

The tap list this year looks pretty good, with some definite busts included. I just love the vibe and the option to go and crush some good whiskey if you're done with the beer.

Also, the music doesn't suck and the food is always good.

I visited the renovated Silver Moon yesterday (official re-opening was the 2nd) to see what they'd changed over the summer. Layout is roughly the same; they raised the ceiling to the original wood beams, the taps are now centralized and coming out of a decommissioned brew tank, and the overall decor is industrial chic. All dive-y remnants are now gone, which is sad, but I bet it will appeal to more visitors. I like how the beer menu was laid out: easy to read for those who just want to pick based on name and style, but also includes malt and hop varieties for those who want more detail. Glad to have the pub back in our scene.

No better way to do this (weather permitting) than driving north to Parkdale for Solera, then Hood River for pFriem, etc. then follow the river back to Portland. If you're interested in malt, Mecca Grade Estate Malt is on the way from Madras to Parkdale and a pretty cool stop.
