Does anyone know if any breweries in Charleston have any gin barrel aged beers? I’ll be there this weekend.

Hey all - This seems to be the one active Charleston thread and I didn't want to start another. I will be in Charleston over President's Day weekend with the family. While I imagine my wife and I would appreciate the culinary and beer scene more without our youngsters, that isn't happening this time around. I'm looking for any insights if any of the breweries are more kid (including a toddler) friendly than others. Also, any restaurants that we'd rather visit alone BUT will have something for the kids? Thanks!

There are always kids at Charles Towne fermentory which is also imo the best brewery in town. Edmunds Oast brewery is also kid friendly, more so than the brewpub which I prefer just because it has like 40+ taps and I think their beer is better than brewery. Overall most are kid friendly except maybe Westbrook which is also a hike unless you are staying in Mt Pleasant. Never seen kids at revelry either.

This was last April so maybe a one time occurrence for Charles Towne....but we were in town for one afternoon only and there was a big can release going on. We wanted some cans but also some drafts and food from the kitchen. We had our 10 year old with us and were turned away at the door. The reason given was that they were busy and didn't want a kid taking up space.

So I got back in line and got in, and then proceeded to let my wife and 10 year old in through the side door when nobody walk looking. We were there long enough to down a couple of pints and order and eat some food, while our kid hid behind us in the corner.

Ironically, there were several people with babies in strollers who they did let in. And a stroller definitely took up more space than my 10 year old.

Yeah makes sense on a can release. Not a lot of room during those days but that’s once a month, otherwise there are kids in there usually. I go weekly pretty much so unless it’s a can release day you are good.

Great info here! My wife and I are heading down on the first week of April. We will be hitting all the beer spots mentioned here, but we are also looking for any true soul food, southern hole in the wall type places. Specially looking for the best fried chicken in Charleston. Thanks, all!

Martha Lou’s and Bertha’s are likely among the best soul places in town. For fried chicken though, my favorite is Leon’s Fine Poultry and Oysters. Newer place and a bit upscale from traditional places. The BBQ chicken at Rodney Scott’s is pretty phenomenal too.

Of note, if not mentioned elsewhere, sadly Closed for Business and Craftsman Kitchen and Tap House are both closed for good.

Awesome, thanks! Those are all on our short list! Has anyone been to Jestine’s Kitchen? I hear it’s really good, but it’s in a very touristy area, so I’m skeptical.

We like to visit Poe's Tavern on Sullivan's Island when we visit family in Mt. Pleasant. The usually have holy city brewery beer on tap. Love the Mud Pluff. Also Red's Ice House on Shem creek is always fun too.

We tried going to Jestine’s a couple times and the long lines turned us off. We’ve been happy going to other places so wrote it off. The Griffin does fried chicken on Wednesday as I recall and it’s very good. Fish and shrimp there are also very good.

That’s really disappointing- any alternatives you could suggest?

I can’t think of anything downtown that would match them but Griffon has a decent tap list with sever locals. Maybe Poogans Smokehouse too. In West Ashley, Craft Conundrum has a huge taplist but no food except trucks sometimes. But in W.A. I usually don’t get any further than the Fermentory.

I thought I'd chime in on my visit after posting a few questions and following along the past few months.

I was just in Charleston this past week with the family and my number one takeaway was that Charles Towne Fermentory (as advertised by all on here) and Edmunds Oast Brewing were producing the best beers in town. It seemed like a wide margin to me but maybe I just tried the wrong other beers. Both were excellent spaces for kids (EOBC would have been even better were the outside temp more friendly). The beers were excellent across styles though I focused on IPAs primarily at the two locations.

I, unfortunately, did not make it to Commonhouse due to bad timing and partially where we were staying (on Isle of Palms). I did make it to Revelry and as suggested the space is not kid friendly. My 7 year old son and I hung on the roof deck (which would have been plenty kid friendly had it not been raining) for a half beer and then went downstairs which when stuck indoors was a tight space.

I grabbed crowlers from Charles Towne and Edmunds Exchange on the first two days and those (as well as a mixed 4 pack from the Exchange) handled most of my evening "at home" drinking needs.

Most restaurants we went to had plenty local to offer and I was able to try from probably 10-15 or so of the local places just by eating lunch and/or dinner each day there.
