Visiting my daughter in a few weeks. I will have my younger kids in tow so I am not looking to be brewery / bar hopping. Any recommendations for restaurants with decent tap selections and anything super local I should be looking to drink (either on tap or back in the hotel in the evening)? We are staying right in Clemson so not likely to wander too far away. It's a short 2 day visit so between that and the family, I'm not going to have much time other than a meal or evening drink in the room. Thanks!
Frothy Beard, Two Blokes, Charlestowne, Westbrook if it’s warm outside for the patio, Edmunds Oast Brewery, Fams, are all places I take my kids. Edmunds having the best area for kids with the food hall and green space and Charlestowne with the best beer. Commonhouse is also in a cool area with good beer with lots of restaurants around that are kid friendly.
http://thewallofbeer.com/preview/ i can't suggest any restaurants but when i'm down visiting my buddy this is the best nearby beer store. not a bad selection and they do growler fills.
I was in Charleston this past summer and these are all great "brewery" recommendations for anyone visiting Charleston but the OP @EDNOSE should note he is 250 miles away if he is staying in Clemson.
Last year my wife and adult son were there and went to Nick’s Tavern and Deli. They might have the best beer options and the bar food was good. They enjoyed it. Seems more like a bar and don’t know if kids are permitted but worth looking into. I think there is a Mellow Mushroom there. The ones I’ve been to have a decent beer selection and food. Kid friendly. Other than that I gathered the area is otherwise a relative wasteland.
When I took my son to visit I just hit Untappd and saw what was close. there was a nice pizza place not far from campus that had a decent tap list.
Nick's and Backstreets downtown definitely have the best beer lists, as well as good bar food. If you can get to Greenville, definitely go to Birds Fly South and Eighth State.
Yes ... i originally made two posts ... one (this one) for the Clemson visit and then a second in a Charleston thread for when we drive to Charleston after Clemson visit (we know how far it is). For a while the two posts got merged (no clue how, assume by a moderator) and now they are back separated. Somehow the first reply in the Charleston thread followed its way here. In any event, thanks for the Clemson replies guys!
Looks like you are getting information for Charleston. A number of places in Clemson I'd recommend, all just a few minutes or less from campus: - beer to go: Wall of Beer (aka Tiger Mart) on Pendleton Rd - excellent selection and good prices. They also serve beer from 20 taps on premises but the atmosphere is more 7-11 than British pub. Nicks on College Ave. - favored by grad students and faculty. UK pub atmosphere; decent food. Multiple taps and always something interesting on tap. Elkmont Tap & Cellar - about 15 craft taps; under Elkmont Trading Co. Mellow Mushroom - upscale pizza and draft beer chain; usually something interesting on tap.
