    Hey guys!

I'll be visiting Ohio State University next month since I got accepted to one of their master's program. They've offered to fly me out and put me in the Blackwell Hotel (ON THE HOUSE!) for one night and I'd like to explore the area and make some IP trades as well. I've done some research through old threads and searched most of the places (Schmidts, CBC, Weilands) but they seem to be further than walking distance. Any recommendations to places nearby the school, or specifically Blackwell?

I'm looking for bomb, noir, and their variants but don't know whether it's readily available. If it isn't, I'm open to trades. Can bring Cali goods including FSW, RR, Bruery (Reserve society), and others. Cheers!

Congratulation on the masters program! OSU is a great school. Although, when looking for somewhere to walk to from the Blackwell, your options are limited. I would suggest that you walk up to High Street and catch the 2 bus south. About a 10 minute ride will have you in the Short North where you can enjoy a wide array of beer spots. My personal favorite is Seventh Son Brewery, and House Beer offers a small, but normally local selection of beer. Unfortunately for you, Bodega, which would be my go-to suggestion will be closed for remodeling all of February.

As far as Prairie beers go, I regret to say Columbus only received 1 shipment of their beers back in October and then it was only 'Merica and Funky Galaxy. Nothing has been distributed from them since, to my knowledge.

Enjoy your stay, and if you have any other questions, let me know.

Trystero nailed it - there's not much to choose from within a short walk from the Blackwell, and your best bet is to take the #2 down to the Short North and hit up one or two of the following:

    Seventh Son Brewery
    Surly Girl Saloon
    Mel Bar and Grille
    Brothers Drake Meadery

House Beer usually doesn't have any taps to write home about, but sometimes you'll get lucky and they'll have something special from Seventh Son, Jackie O's, Columbus Brewing Company or Hoof Hearted. As of Monday their tap selection wasn't too exciting, though.

tOSU grad here. Best of luck.

Bodhi is king...Columbus has come a long way on the beer scene since I graduated.

Definitely echo the #2 idea. Bodega may be considered "walking distance", but from the Blackwell, it's like a two-mile walk. There's also a Whole Foods on Lane Ave, but again, that's a 2 mile walk when it's said and done.

The #2 can get you down through the Short North. If you take it north, you can always stop at Pace-Hi for bottles.

What day are you going to be here? Might help people to know whether they'd be able to meet up or not :stuck_out_tongue:

I'm still waiting to pick a date that works for me. As soon as I know, I will update the thread.

Does Ohio have any good sours or BA stouts?

Rivertown makes some good sours, and they're available in Columbus. As far as available Ohio BA stouts go, maybe at some places they might have bottles of Hoppin' Frog Barrel Aged BORIS left, it tends to come and go occasionally. Thirsty Dog Barrel Aged Siberian Night should be available too, but it's a bit pricey.

Great Lakes BA Blackout Stout is also a good one, but it's brewery-only so you're not going to be able to buy it off the shelf or anything.

A few here and there. Sours are a bit few and far between outside of Rivertown. Their Ojos Negros and Lambic are both good, IMO. I didn't like the Gueuze as much as the Lambic, and I don't like the lambic as much as the Ojos, FWIW. New Holland and Rivertown did a collabo recently called Funk Vessel, I'm not sure if it made its way to Columbus or not, so I tweeted them to ask. When they answer, I'll post it in here. As for BA Stouts, there are a few, Jackie O's Dark App and Oil of Aphrodite should be around town in the hands of more than a few BA's, BA Siberian Night is still out and around at some of the shops, BA Blackout from GLBC should be in the hands of a few people, BA Boris should still be on shelves, BA Doris MIGHT be around somewhere on a shelf. I'm sure I'm missing other stuff.

Honestly though, while you are in Columbus, pick up a growler (or two) of Bodhi and take it back to share with people. People need to see why we talk about it so much here.

I hope so too, I haven't tried it yet. I'll probably drink it next weekend.

My brother split a bottle of Funk Vessel with me. I'd put it up there close to Ojos Negros. Excellent beer!

Are you referring to bottles from past Jackie O's releases, or have I missed something?

You can probably find regular (non BA) Dark Apparition and Oil of Aphrodite around Columbus on draft. There are no bottles/ draft of BA stuff yet. The previous post was most likely referring to in-person trades with local Columbus BAs. Many Columbus BAs frequent our bottle releases.

Hey guys, so I just booked my flight and it looks like I'll be coming in on the 4th at 5:20pm and leaving the 5th at 6:05pm. I'll most likely be free the night of the fourth to hang out, trade, and grab a drink or two so if anybody wants to meet up, please PM me and I will make a grouip conversation to figure out what to do. I really want to try Bodhi DIPA.
