I'll be in DC for a few days later this month, and I was wondering which good beer places I should try and get to, or what local stuff I should try. Is the Dogfish Alehouse any good? Bier Baron Hotel? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Lots of these threads around if you don't mind digging back a page it two. Cliff's notes: dfh alehouse is crap, hit up bier baron, churchkey, pizza paradiso, meridian pint, and the big hunt. Local stuff ti try are dc brau, Duclaw, port city, mad fox. Buy beer at Chevy chase wine, rodman's, Schneider's. Enjoy the trip!
He hit it all, Bier Baron also has a great happy hour special a Burger and a Draft Beer for 5 bucks cant be beat
Awesome, thanks for the suggestions. We're staying near dupont circle, so we're close walking to Bier Baron.
May as well hit churchkey/birch and barley too while in Dupont. Its just under a mile.from Dupont.metro, and next to a well stocked beer dept in a whole foods. Also, resist temptation to shop at 1 west Dupont. They need to learn people won't stand for their ridiculous gouging even if they do get the good stuff
Check out the third reply down, excellent advice, http://beeradvocate.com/community/threads/visiting-d-c-strategic-shopping-advice.30169/#post-373101
Thank you for the info, I've been looking over the selection at Churchkey, and will definitely make my way over there. I already warned my girlfriend, but luckily, she is beginning to enjoy my beer obsession too.
Their selections changes often, get there early, almost when they open before it gets really crowded and you'll get a good seat and hopefully be able to talk to the bartenders, they've always been great to me, and give me some samples of stuff if I ask about it, before I order.
I go in there to openly laugh out loud at their ludicrous prices. Kills the time between seeing Al at Connecticut Avenue and hitting Paradiso for happy hour. They are hurting craft beer. My favorites were: $35 for Parabola $42 for Hopslam (a month after it had been bottled and out on shelves) $25 for a single bottle of DFH 120 Minute $90 4 pack of DFH 120 Minute
Damn, they've only gotten worse! And I thought 25 for La Folie and 35 for BCBCS was bad. Maybe they are already hurting, and trying to make up the losses (please oh please)
There is nothing wrong with the dfh alehouse, but they are both way out in the suburbs of both VA and MD respectively. If you are staying in Dupont you are pretty much surrounded by lots of good options that have already been mentioned.
Thank you to everybody for the suggestions. We went to Pizza Paradiso when we got in town, and had a few good beers on cask and draft. Also when to Churchkey last night and had a GREAT experience. We made our way there after being completely underwhelmed with RFD (totally empty and slow service). Our waitress was great, knowledgable, and gave us four free tasters after I had ordered four myself. Had a great DC Brau Barrel Aged Stone of Arbroath, some corn arancini, a great fig and prosciuto flatbread, and a surprisingly good grilled cheese. Then we topped off the night with a stop into the Whole Foods, grabbed a DFH Theobroma and a Stone Vertical Epic 11. Again, thank you to everybody for the great suggestions.
