I'll be in Decorah this coming weekend. I've never been before and plan to check out Toppling Goliath. Any good beers that I should try? Also, any liquor stores that I should check out?

    Thanks!

Bring your own growlers. TG's are clear LOL. And yes, I am serious.

I was shocked when I got a growler and it was clear. I made sure to cover it up during the car trip. I thought the growler was a little expensive at $18. But it was the only growler I have ever bought in Iowa so that just might be the way of things.

Better like pale ales if you go to Toppling Goliath. Although they have a couple lagers and a stout or two, everything else is hoppy pales.

If you are worried about a growler being clear, that means you are sitting on it too long. Growlers are meant to be drank fresh. Easy as that. I am a big fan of their Psuedo Sue and their 90 shilling, or something along those lines. Good beer and good people.

I haven't had a beer of theirs that wasn't outstanding. My buddies and I camped out at their site at DD and tried them all - fantastic stuff! The Riwakin (sp?) Dead is great, esp. if you like Nelson hops. Other standouts were the Golden Nugget and Zeelander - the latter is incredibly earthy and one that really grew on me, at first taste it was kind of "Whuck?", then I couldn't get enough of it.
In any case, you're in for a treat!

Unless you mean within 20 minutes of sitting in the back seat of your car that doesn't hold. It only takes a few minutes for beer to become lightstruck in the right circumstances. There's a reason nobody uses clear growlers. Also, I would highly recommend the Golden Nugget.

Riwakan the Dead is Riwaka Hops. Zeelander is Nelson Sauvin. You'll notice a theme with naming beers. Millenium Falcon- Millenum and Falconers Flight, Golden Nugget- Nugget hops, El Dorado- El Dorado Hops (Thanks alot New Belgium for screwing that up), etc. I also agree that they do fine work and they are fantastic folks as well. I cannot wait until they get the new brewery up and running.

Ok then put it in a bag until you get home then throw it in the fridge. Problem solved.

OR ... use a brown growler as I suggested to avoid the potential problem.

We are using clear growlers for a simple reason, our local customers prefer them when polled. We started with amber growlers and problem is you can not see if they are clean. I am sure you are very tidy with your growlers after consumption, but you would be surprise how many people are not, and the build up inside can need to be scrubbed. It's not as easy as you think because I personally just scrubbed a customers growler with a build up you would never notice in a brown bottle. It took a fair amount of elbow grease with a bent growler brush.

Also, when transporting ALL growlers, keep it out of the light. Light can also penetrate amber glass too. Plus, a growler should ALWAYS be kept chilled, and it is very dark in most coolers!

Look for us to offer both in the future, so you can choose!

    Cheers!

If we still have Assassin on tap I would try it. We never had it on tap before. This keg was from the gold barrel, and had been saved for topping up the barrels.

ZeeLander is my current IPA of choice at our taproom brewery.....let me know what you think of it.

    Cheers and drive safe!

Thanks for coming over to our brewery! $4 for the new growler and $14 for the refill is lower than when we started. Mug club members refill any growler for $10, except Golden Nugget which is $12. We are going to try and lower prices, as we have since we started, but hops and malt keep going up!

I hope you thought the beer was worth it!

    Cheers!

I have a dedicated Decorah TG Growler soft sided cooler that comes with me in the trunk. With that being said, word on the street is TG will be rolling bottles out of their new system by March.... and my bet is they will be brown bottles for those who fear light so much.

Clark- What does it cost to join the mug club?

Yup, we will be rolling out bottles and they will be brown. We are also working on some other growler options that I think everyone will be happy with. We wish we were further along with those, but we are always happy to fill growlers from other breweries, as long as they have the government warning.

Mug club is $50 for a year. I think it is full at the moment, but if you give Chelsea a call at the taproom, she can answer any and all questions about the mug club.

The growler was not for me to consume sadly. I know the person I delivered it to was going to enjoy it. I enjoyed my short time in the taproom and I went through 2 of the samplers so I got a good rundown on what you were brewing at the time. My favorites were Golden Nugget and Tsunami.

Thanks for all of the replies. I was able to try Golden Nugget, Dorothy's Lager, Tsunami, and PseudoSue. PseudoSue was definitely my favorite, but all were good.
