I apologize in advance if this has been posted and answered before, but I'm heading to Denver/Fort Collins next weekend and am looking for the hot places to hit. And I'd love to know what's on the shelves right now.

Already have a tour for New Belgium, also visiting Odells and Equinox
Checking out Tipsy's for the shock and awe

I'm a BA Stout and Barleywine type of guy (just getting into sours), keeping an eye out for Russian River, Hair of the Dog and Decheutes, so that should give you an idea of my styles.

Any suggestions on what else to look for, where to go?

    Thanks!

If you're getting into sours get into funkwerks and crooked stave. Local legends.

Honestly, I'd rather use the time to go to Boulder than Littleton to hit up Tipsy's. More options in Boulder and a pretty comparable drive, Tipsy's is far and seperate from anything else. You really won't find anything at Tipsy's that you can't find elsewhere.

Funkwerks and Crooked Stave are good choices. Both are up in Fort Collins. And great call on Odells.

If you are a baseball fan and the Rockies are playing during your stay, I'd hit up a game. Both Falling Rock Taphouse and Breckenridge Brewery are within a half a block from the stadium and offer nice places to pre and post game. Falling Rock is a great beer bar and worth a visit regardless of a baseball game though. Down the street (about 7 blocks) is also Freshcraft, a nice casual spot for decent food and a very nice selection of beer.

There really isn't any shock and awe at tipsys. Their bomber room was really a let down, and although the place is huge I think davidsons and argonauts blow it away.

I agree. Tipsy's is a huge building, tons of square feet, but places like Argonaut (never been to Davidsons to compare) are pretty much comparable but everything is packed closer together. Tipsy's can just spread out more and they probably might buy a little more of a specific beer, but in terms of overall variety, no different than a Argonaut, or Lukas Liquors, or Liquor Mart.

What do you recommend in Boulder? I have family in that area that I might visit.

Wilbur's in Ft. Collins is alot better than Tipsy's! No Hair of the Dog out here. Deschutes, Uinta, Russian River are solid non CO brews. I would visit Great Divide and you can still find some BA Ruffian if you havent in Illinois, but the brewery is a great time, the walk to Star Bar, Falling Rock and/or Freshcraft. In Ft. Collins stop in the Mayor of Old Town to see a sweet bar with 100 taps!! If you have time drive through Longmont and stop at Oskar Blues (or Lyons) then head to Boulder and stop by Avery! Denver area also has great breweries: Dry Dock, Wit's End, Renegade, Copper Kettle.

I'd do Avery in Boulder as has been entioned. Liquor Mart is a nice liquor store up there that has a great build your own 6 pack selection and can offer some beers that don't make it down to Denver (like Epic). Oskar Blues Liquid's and Solids and/or their Tasty Weasal are also good selections and are about a 15 minute drive from Boulder and then you can return to Denver without having to make the trek back through Boulder.

It looks amazing, Should I have one of you kind-hearted souls pick one up for me, or do you think it will still be on the shelves by Thursday?

Parker payless has it. I'm not too interested in it, and it doesn't look to be moving off the shelves that fast. But I thought the same about another high priced 12 oz brew recently and all of a subben it's all gone too. So you never know.

Nice try but there are no Firestone Walker whales. :sunglasses:

Seriously though, to call Funkwerks and Crooked Stave local legends is the definition of hyperbole. New Belgium, Great Divide, even Odell, those are the real local legends.

New belgium, dreat divide, and odell are nationwide, and aren't known for their sours and wild ales like CS and Funwerks are. Maybe I should have used the term "cult following". Then again that could be hyperbole as well.

I'm just gonna keepdrinking and watching Dogma.

If that's a hyperbole, what's a barrel-aged hyperbole? Saying Goose Island is a craft brewery?

Thanks for the heads up on the collab, I guess i'll risk it for 3 days.

So just to clarify, Funkworks and Crooked Stave are either the same company or are both in the same building? The only place for both of them appears to be one building just east of NB/Odell/etc.

Crooked Stave uses Funkwerks facility at this point in time.
