El bait has a crowler machine as well....can't recall if iowa taproom does or not. There's also a mountains vs the Midwest event going on at El bait starting Saturday at 5 so plan accordingly if you are adverse to crowds.

Iowa Taproom does have a crowler machine as well.

Saturday is the Cityview Brewfest at 7 Flags. Virtually every beer distributed in IA will be there. I'd get there early if you want any decent TG or Surly.

515's hoppy offerings are verrry impressive. OJ would be a go-to if i could get it in nebraska.

I thought the OJ was a little light. Hoptitis is very good, but not $30 growler fill good.

I've always had good food at Iowa Taproom as well. If they still have Firetrucker Tropical Burn on tap, I suggest you try it. They have a great selection of all the breweries mentioned above

Thanks everyone for your recommendations! Had a great time in Des Moines and was seriously impressed with the bike friendly trails and breweries. I was able to bike over to 515 twice and really dug the Blase' & Hopititis. El Bait was crazy right before the I cubs game - so much fun. It was great to see Confluence Des Moines IPA on tap at so many locations. A very solid IPA. Twisted Vine was only 2 miles from the hotel and I stopped by on my way to Jethros to pick up some BBQ. I think it was mentioned earlier, but they still have some work to do IMO. We really enjoyed the farmers market downtown Saturday morning. I definitely need to get back to Des Moines more often!

Glad to hear, @Ish1 Those of us who live here sometimes take for granted what our small city has to offer and it's always nice to hear when out-of-towners who visit enjoy their time here!

Great thread guys and very helpful. I'm attending a wedding in Western Iowa in September but taking extra time and flying in to DSM and spending a few days there. Already added most of the recs to my list. Also going to do the drive to TG one morning, feel like if I'm in the state i might as well make the drive!

Just so you know, it's 400 miles round trip from Des Moines to Decorah. I don't know where you're going in Western Iowa, but if it's at all northwest, you could be looking at being with a **** hair of 1,000 miles of driving during this trip.

States start getting big out here. Don't want to discourage you or anything, just give you a realistic idea of what you're chewing off.

If you make it up to TG, be sure to hit Pulpit Rock.

Ha totally understood! Wedding on a saturday in Western IA. fly in Wed night to DSM, Thurs drive to TG and other points East for the day, back to DSM. Friday drive out West making stops along the way. First time to Iowa and not sure when I'll be back so trying to see the most we can. Traveling without the kids so anyone who's taken a road trip with the kids knows how "easy" one without can be hahaha!
