I'll spending the weekend in Durham and was wondering what the 'can't miss' beer spots are?

Bull City Tavern, Fullsteam, Sam's Bottle Shop...what else?! We are there to celebrate a birthday, so we are looking for awesome food and awesome beer!

    Thanks in advance and cheers!

Go to the 9th street and Erwin Road area. Since you're visiting Sams, you'll be right in the middle. Erwin Road has a great restaurant called Nosh that I go to often. 9th street has the Blue Acorn which serves central/south american cuisine. Not much for beer but great food.

Lots of good food in Durham. Dames Chicken & Waffles and Watts Grocery are my favorite spots to go when we're out there.

Fullsteam is worth a visit I think, but their taproom is more impressive than their beer IMO. Definitely go to Sam's.

Dames is so good. We have a chicken & waffles place in Raleigh that people always talk about, but Dames flat out puts it to shame.

A lot of good food trucks around Durham too, the best of which are often over there in that area where Fullsteam is. Porchetta, Pie Pushers, American Meltdown come to mind.

Hi @bryanole27! This weekend should be a fun time at Fullsteam...we're releasing First Frost, our winter persimmon ale. Area restaurants to check out include Mateo and Pizzera Toro, though that's just two of a long list that I personally love. Toast is great for lunch.

    Come say hey!

I only wish fullsteam was closer to where I live. Love first frost too. Can't wait to get a bottle.

As a Durhamite I can recommend the following places:
Sam's Quik Shop is CANNOT miss.
Farmer's Market Saturday 8-12pm is super cool. Great food trucks. Sometimes there's a beer tent from Fullsteam but either way the Farmer's Market gives you a good perspective of how cool Durham actually is.
The DIY section of Durham offers Fullsteam Brewery (Caveman hit it right on. Beer is ok) MotorCo concert hall, To eat The Pit and Geer Street are really great spots. VERY HIPSTERish. Has a Brooklyn type vibe IMO.
Also right up the street is Surf Club which has solid drinks and is a fun place.
Also if you're on Main st go to Pinhook or Bull McCabe's for Irish bar that has very solid beer selection.

Hope this helps. I love Durham!!!

Check the hours, but a short side-trip to Haw River Farmhouse Ales in Saxapahaw should be fun. Just north and west of Chapel Hill /Carrboro heading through UCLA (Upper Chatham, Lower Alamance) towards Greensboro. This is a beautiful spot and worth the effort.

Saxapahaw is the bomb. 1st Bottle release tomorrow. Sweet little village too. The general market is where it's at.

2nd the Haw River suggestion. If you're trying to drive out somewhere of course.

Bestway keeps Fullsteam around as much as possible. New stuff now. First Frost soon.

I'm well aware. But my post was about the brewery itself. its a great atmosphere there and i wish we had more options like that here in the Triad.

Well, I'm back from my trip to Durham and wanted to thank you all for the suggestions...we had a blast!! Here is what we did:

    Friday:
    Nosh...great food, nicely priced.
Fullsteam...awesome tap room, very impressed. Place was packed, but never had trouble getting a beer and crowd was very nice. Beer line-up was delicious.
Motorco...interesting place to say the least, but had a fun time. Couple shots and some white-people dancing:slight_smile:

Saturday: Nursing the hangover, worked Main Street
The Federal: grabbed a Lagunitas double-hopped Dogtown and some awesome garlic & parsley fries. I'm back.
Triangle Brewing: cool vibe, decent beer, and mac&cheese bites.
Bull City Burger: my biggest letdown. Beer was just OK, burger was just OK, place was packed. Maybe my hopes were too high, but I feel this fell short.
Geer Street Beer Garden: after a dark, scary walk...we finally arrived at the Beer Garden. Service was very nice, place was quiet and the patio was nice and cozy. Also found the elusive Ponysaurus we had been hunting all day. Nice finish to the night.

    Sunday:
Dames Chicken & Waffles: tried to eat here, but with an hour and 45 minute wait, we just couldn't.
Bull McCabes: this is where we 'settled' after leaving Dames...and we didn't feel like we settled at all. My Cubano was fantastic, and they had Oude Tart on draft?! Yes please. Pricey pour, but worth it.
Sam's Quik Shop: on the way out of town, we stopped by Sam's. I have been in a lot of bottle shops, but this might be the best. I live in NC (Charlotte) and still spent about $100. If I was coming from a different state, I could have spent $1000! Very impressive, the shelves never end.

Overall, we all had a blast and concluded we would love to come back to Durham.

Thanks again for all the great suggestions!

    Cheers!
