Watching this thread now as it looks like I may be coming to Helsinki in late July! Wife is presenting at a conference. Trying to decide if we bring the kids or not...

Either way, super pumped to see Finland even if it's just for a short visit. I did quite a bit of traveling around Europe in my late teens/early 20s. Changed my life. Can't wait to go back.

Welcome to Finland! I will be out of town most of July, but how about a beer if things work out?

Finally got tickets booked yesterday! Flying direct on Finnair out of Chicago. We'll be arriving on July 27 and departing on Aug 3. Short trip, but it'll be just the wife and I with no kids, so mentally it's a long trip.

Love to hear some recs for experiencing the beer culture there! And obviously anything that anyone feels is a can't miss to see and explore while there. Feel free to message me if you want to to get off topic on your recommendations. Thanks all!

EDIT: especially someone willing to give hotel feedback. We have a good 6-8 to choose from that are discounted. Also looking at Air BnBs too...

I have stayed at these 4 hotels in Helsinki, that are all commendable: Hellsten Helsinki Parliament (an apartment hotel, no meals served, but a fully equipped kitchen in the apartment), Scandic Hakaniemi,
    Radisson Blu Aleksanteri Hotel,
Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna (just by the railway station, as central as you can get).

Appreciate this info. The Original Sokos Vaakuna is actually one of the hotels we get a discount through because of the conference, but is all booked up. Hellsten was also full, which is a bummer because the kitchen would be nice as we're considering an Air BnB too. It's actually not a terrible price due to conference discounts for us to stay at either Crowne Plaza or Scandic Park. It's also where the conference is. Any thoughts there? Original Sokos Presidentti is also an option. I see Scandic includes breakfast in the cost. I'm not really a Crowne Plaza kinda guy, but the price isn't terrible, and COVID didn't allow us to have a 10th Anniversary trip or celebrate her 40th. So we're looking to splurge a bit.

Also, and just as important or maybe moreso, ISO Finnish lager recommendations...

Scandic is a Nordic hotel chain, their hotels are nice and clean, often with large rooms, they have a decent breakfast buffet that will keep you going till a late lunch, and they are often used for conferences. But if you are looking for "a quaint & cosy hotel with an atmosphere", look somewhere else. I've never stayed at Crowne Plaza but I expect it to be good.

Concerning Finnish lagers, nearly all I have tasted have been half-decent, without anyone really standing out. One brand is often available in different ABV versions, so just sample as many as you can handle. Beer Hunters Mufloni Mosaic Lager is worth a go.

When we first arrived in Helsinki, we stayed at the Scandic Grand Central Helsinki for the good part of a month until we managed to lockdown an apartment. Can confirm that it was awesome and the breakfast buffet alone was worth it. Damn, I really miss that breakfast buffet.

I've managed to hit many of the major beer spots here in Helsinki over the last year or so that we've been here. I'll drop my top "must visit" spots next week, plus a few other suggestions (including food).
I'll keep that in mind. I drinking mostly Finnish lagers, which are everywhere.

I'd be down for meeting up for some beers too.

Doh! My bad, @flat_lander. Forgot to comeback to this thread.

Okay, there a ton of places that you could hit for beer, but you're not going to be able to hit them all. So, assuming you're going to spend your time in the southern part of Helsinki (downtown, basically), mostly on foot, and want to focus on Finnish beer, here are some suggestions off the top of my head:
    • Juova: a beer geek haven with a very solid selection of Finnish beers.
    • Kaisla: it's around the corner from Juova, so you might as well swing by for a pint. Heard they have some Sahti on right now too.
    • Villi Wäinö: huge selection of Finnish beers, including a bunch of Sahti.
    • Salamanation: it's a brewery taproom/craft beer bar about a block away from Villi Wäinö.
    • Helsinki Bryggeri: basically one of the only breweries in the immediate area, at the end of the Esplanade Park, and worth popping in you're in that area (near the first two food spots below too).
    • Pien Shop: small bottle shop/beer bar with a solid selection of beers from Finland and elsewhere. They're a bit pricy though and charge a service fee for drinking bottles/cans on-premise. They also have around a dozen beers on tap that always include guest beers (usually from the US though), and you can buy beers to takeaway up to 8% ABV.
    • Barski: tucked away in the mall across from the rail station. Around two dozen beers on tap (Finnish and beyond) + even more in bottle/can. You can also buy beers to takeaways up to 8% and I believe there's a discount for takeaway too.
    • Suomenlinna Brewery: take a quick ferry ride to Suomenlinna (islands/sea fortress), hike around, hit the brewery for some beers and food.
    • CoolHead Brew: if you have the time, grab the 78 bus (platform is outside of the rail station) up to the brewery, which is located in a massive previously abandoned greenhouse. Very unique spot with good beers. They do pizza and BBQ too.
As for food, I recommend checking out the following:
    • Savotta: across from the Helsinki Cathedral/Senate Square. Head there for some traditional Finnish eats. I highly recommend starting with their famous sampler plate + blueberry shots (ask for them with cream) and blueberry wine. They also sell some Kaski beers/lagers from Takatalo & Tompuri Brewing (100% Finnish ingredients).
    • Café Engel: next to Savotta. Their various breakfast plates are a great way to start your day.
    • Helsinki Market Square: definitely worth visiting the outdoor vendors if you want some traditional Finnish bites and whatnot.
    • Old Market Hall: more traditional Finnish food + other vendors.
I could go on, but you really can't got wrong with any of the above. And, if any other spots come to mind, I'll drop them here.

Safe travels and keep me posted!

Sitting at Frontera Grill bar in O'Hare having a Cruz Blanca lager right now! We arrive tomorrow afternoon. Hitting the ground running with an all Finnish band metal show at On the Rocks if anyone dares...

Appreciate the recs @Todd . I'll browse these on the plane. Let's try and connect while we're out there. Love to grab a beer or three.

Great recommendation on Juova. Was wild to see them stocking Trillium cans while ordering a beer. Also, cans of Narrow Gauge and Deth's Tar. It's definitely a global world. As you can see, I clearly went a different direction...

This is such a beautiful city. Just a random view while waiting for our tram yesterday night...
