Great thread. I honestly feel like HPB may qualify as the best brewery in LA right now. Yea, that's right.

HPB and MacLeod may be two of the most under rated and unspoken about breweries around. The are both really stars of the Los Angeles area. I feel the same about both places - while you may not personally like a particular beer, all of them are well made, high quality and good.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. No Shake Up/Wake Up variants on but really enjoyed Bonkers, Uncultured, and Uncontrollable. Slow Moves wasn't bad and regular ole' Wake Up is nothing to complain about. Speedway on tap too? I'll be coming back sooner than later.

I was very impressed with Phantom Carriage yesterday. Monkish is doing some good stuff as well.

I'll be trekking through LA near LAX tomorrow around noon and want to stop somewhere on my way back up north. I've been to ESBC several times, looking for something new. Any events or releases in the area tomorrow? I'm thinking about hitting up highland park because I've never been and would like to check them out.

If you haven't visited ESBC since they finished the new tasting room I'd recommend it. Also, some good stuff on right now. But yeah, HPB is absolutely worth checking out - the gem of the East Side. Whereabouts up North are you heading back to?

If you haven't been to Smog City that's a must as well.

A little out of the way but Beachwood will still have tons of awesome stuff on tomorrow (Anniversary party today)

I'll be heading back over the grapevine to central valley. Haven't been to smog city so may try to hit both. Do they both serve food? If so which has better grub? Thanks!

Highland Park is worth a stop, although it sounds out of your way. A couple of weeks ago they were selling a bunch of bottles for their wild ales, but I don't know if they do that all the time. There's also a doughnut place—'Donut Friend'—down the block that's really good.

I'm ok with going out of my way within reason. Actually contemplating beechwood because of the anniversary party leftovers.

Any decent beer bars in the general vicinity of the Shrine Auditorium (near 110/10 interchange)? Something with decent food preferred.

Maybe the Lab across the street from USC on Fig, never been but don't think there are a lot of good options...Yardhouse by staples but that's a bit further...

Head a bit further south to Downey and hit up Uncle Henry's Deli. http://www.unclehenrysdeli.com/

There isn't a ton right around there (don't know much about the lab), but the downtown stuff is within somewhat reasonable range - City Tavern or Plan Check are a quick Lyft away, and if you go a bit farther there's the Little Tokyo/Arts District nexus, like Far Bar, Mumford, Wurstkuche that might not be so bad.

closest are probably City Tavern and Barrel Down. Both have good taps and food. City Tavern will be the easiest parking as there's a huge parking lot attached to it and it's pretty easy to get to off the freeway (110, off at 9th, immediate left as you're getting off on Francisco and the parking lot is straight ahead. Fig@7th (or target, it's labeled with so many things))

As always, thanks for the advice folks. Hit city tavern pre-show last night. Convenient and enjoyable, with pretty good taps.

Great thread... lots of great information. I'm flying in to LA on Wednesday. I will be south of downtown heading towards Palm Desert. Is Mr. K's one of the better bottles shops to go to?

For sure. Fair prices, awesome folks and outstanding selection. Also super close to all of the Anaheim breweries if you have time to have a drink or grab a growler/bottle to go

Where south of downtown? You might be close to Ramirez Liquor.
