I am visiting Memphis for a weekend (March 20-22) with my wife and was looking for recommendations on bars, breweries, bottle shops, and even specific beers to look for on the shelf or at a brewery. I would certainly appreciate any help/recommendations. I was looking around through the places section, but wasn't really familiar with the Memphis/Tennessee breweries/beer scene. Any specific places to go or beers to look for? Further, if anyone is interested, and depending on plans with the people we are staying with, I would be more than happy to meet up with some fellow BAs at a bar/brewery, and could try to bring a few ohio/midwest beers with me if anyone would be interested in an IP trade. I will most likely be driving, so should be able to haul some things with me. Thanks for the help! Matt
See this thread from last week for local brewery and bottle shop recommendations http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/18-hours-in-memphis-on-saturday.245947/#post-3157760
Thanks for the help! Maybe I misread a post on this a while back, but are there some odd restrictions about what places can sell what abv level beers? Also, any suggestions as far as on the shelf beers to look for?
Wiseacre just released Snowbeard (havent had it yet) and you may still run across some Astronaut Status (barrel aged stout, loved it). You can also pick up some Sue from Yazoo in most stores. The hours are limited at some of the tap rooms for the breweries so plan accordingly. I personally love the Wiseacre tap room and the selection they keep on tap there is the best. You can also buy bottles and cans there but they can not be consumed on site (silly state laws). Best selection is at liquor stores (no high gravity in grocery stores) and they are closed on Sunday (another silly state law). http://www.memphiscraftbeer.com/ http://memphis.suntimes.com/mem-entertainment/7/129/62739/best-beer-bars-memphis/
Thanks for the information! Wiseacre sounds realky good. Are there bottles and cans available only at the brewery or at liquor stores as well?
They are available both places. The liquor stores don't get as much of the limited release stuff (bombers) but they will have the cans.
I should be working that weekend at Wiseacre. If you come by the tap room, my name is Trevor. I am the big guy behind the bar. I also give the tours there.
I live here as well so holler at me if you want to have a beer. IG: cravenbeer. Email: [email protected]
Thanks for the responses @CraigTravor and @cravenbeer, I'd definitely be interested in meeting up. Thanks for reaching out!
Wiseacre, definitely. Just visited Memphis over the weekend, and was glad we stopped in. The brewery itself is awesome, and a nice place to hang out for a while, but the beer was great, as well! I was looking to go to Memphis Made as well, but they seemed to have really limited hours for the taproom. Being Californian, it's always a shock to me how hard it is to hang out in taprooms in the south!
