Should also note that our rush hours are different than most. Around here rush hour starts around 2:30 and runs till about 7. You will find that some areas jam up quicker than others.

Also on a side note, people still buy bottles at D's?

Dont get me wrong I used to go to D's all the time. Spent a lot of money there, but there were really the only game in town at the time. I personally feel that other places, especially Giant Eagle, have passed them by. I just found it strange people recommending out of towners go there.

That pretty much sums it up for me as well. They seem victims of their own success, imo. Since they were the only game in town for a while, I think they got lazy. I wish they would dump the wetboard tap-list and hand-written prices; so tacky. Giant Eagle definitely comes first when I am nearby one of the better ones.

Fair enough. Outside of piggybacking brunch at Square, I haven't visited D's for a while. I'm not sure where OP will end up, but House looks to be a reach for him and I figured D's was a little more quintessential Pittsburgh than GE.

I think for someone visiting from out of town, seeing the Beer Cave at D's for the first time might be pretty cool. It's worth a visit, even if planning on purchasing loads of stuff elsewhere.

Agree that House is a bit outta the way.

I'm going to try to fit a few of the bottle shops into the trip. A quick look online tells me that regardless of the place suggested, 95% of what any of them carry will be stuff I can't get at home. So little good stuff from the States gets imported into Ontario, and when it does, it disappears after a few weeks never to be seen again.

I love checking out a new-to-me city and seeing tons of stuff on the shelves I never have before.

I am just around the corner from Dee's and haven't been there in months. GE Shadyside is the same distance from my house with a comparable selection at a fraction of the cost. I do 90% of my beer shopping there.

Stop in Meadville to Voodoo Brewery on your way down or back. You will Drive right past the Meadville Exit on 79, it's not but 2 minutes off the exit. Same goes for Lavery in Erie. Its off the 79 exit as well down on 12th street Erie.

As far as bottle shops, not much in Meadville or Erie that you can't get elsewhere. Wegman's on Peach St has the best prices, U pick 6 and 1000 Beers have similar selections, some other stuff but higher prices. Giant Eagle in Meadville is a waste of time.

I think Church is a cool place and definitely a neat stop if you have never been there. There beer is fine (never thought it was outstanding, but never thought undrinkable) and the food is good. We always like to take people down there who have never been before, cool atmosphere to check out.

In looking over the Draai Laag website as we start planning the finer details of the trip, I notice, as @RblWthACoz notes, that their hours are limited and they are open only Thurs - Saturday. Are their beers available elsewhere? I am very intrigued by some of the descriptions of what they make.

Cheers, and once again, thanks for all the advice.

Pretty sure I saw a wide variety of Draai Laag bottles at House of 1,000 Beers 2 weeks ago. Atlas Bottle Works may have one or two, but they just as easily may be out.

Draai Laag occasionally makes it to Whole Foods in Wexford as well. Worth a call to see what they have imo

I was at House of 1K beers earlier this week and they had 7-8 different varieties of Draai Laag. They were out of Koelschip, but still had Red and Black Briars, but not many.

Looks like I will be driving down on Sunday April 3rd, and will be in the city Monday through Wednesday and Friday til noon. Please do let me know if there is anything I should keep my eyes out for.

My plans for bottle shopping are to try to visit House of 1000 Beers and Atlas for bottles while in the city, and then Whole Foods in Wexford and Giant Eagle in Cranberry on the way back north.

We're still deciding where to eat and drink while in the city, but will likely do one evening at Church (again, my wife really likes the look of the place).

Before hitting the road I'm planning to attend the release of this:

    http://bellwoodsbrewery.com/the-power-of-the-blend/

Bellwoods is generally regarded as Toronto's top brewery and they make much of the top rated barrel aged beer in the country. I'd love to gift a bottle or two to any of you who've helped me with all the great info as I've planned my trip. Drop me a BM if you might be available to meet up one evening while I'm in the city. We're still not sure of all the details of where we will be and when, but I'm hoping a schedule or two might allow for something.

    Cheers, and thanks again everyone.

I don't have my weekend availability cemented yet, but if I think there's time for a run down to South Side (Fat Heads and Pipers), I will message you privately to see if you'd like to swap a Bellwoods for a Hop JuJu.
