Yeah, but I have this thing about going to every Portland brewery at least once. I guess I could get off on a technicality since they don't actually make the wort at Splash?

Oh, I will. Though it may be tough to enlist a buddy to go into that place with me. Have you seen the pictures on their website? Looks like Margaritaville, Studio 54, and a clown college had a three way (not to be confused with THE 3-Way).

You say that like it's a bad thing.

I thought you might've been exaggerating just a tad, so I went and had a look at their website.

You are not exaggerating. Not even a tad.

If I didn't have plans tomorrow and a plane to catch Sunday morning, I'd volunteer to go with you. Don't go alone.

If it's any consolation, their beer is supposedly only $1/pint, so if it sucks you won't be wasting that much money.

Also, I'm a glutton for punishment, and I have a bit of free time tomorrow afternoon. Anyone want to meet there for a beer around 2ish?

I'm at Great Notion now with 2 buddies, but neither are real jazzed about the idea of going to Splash. Gonna try to lobby them. I'll post again if I'm successful.

So... They don't open till high tide, and I forgot to check the tide chart today. Off to Bailey's!

So you have to consult a tide table? Wha?

I am crazy intrigued now. Do they follow maritime law inside?

You really stopped by at 3pm and they were closed?

Splash Bar (before it was a "brewery") was a favorite hangout spot for the Real World Portland.

I don't know if any of them worked there or not.

It was around 2:30, but yes. We checked the hours, and they apparently never open before 5, which means I'm never going back.

Well, fuck us all. That cements my already steadfast pledge to never attempt to go back.

It's almost certainly the most confusing open/closed sign ever. Which is probably the only interesting thing about that place.

I'm so glad this thread is here. I'll be driving here in late May, and this helps. I also plan on bringing beers back home with me. Would it be possible to add a list of "must bring home to another state" brews?

I don't think that's a realistic possibility frankly. From what I've seen, everyone on here has hugely divergent tastes when it comes to "must have" beers. Also, many (most?) of the more popular beers out here are seasonal or limited release beers, so availability would depend on when you plan to visit. In the case of de Garde for example, every time they do a new release, they invariably are releasing beers that on one's seen or heard of before. Another problem, is that many of the most popular beers out here (notorious, hop venom, pallet jack, head shake, etc.), are draft only beers (though the rapid increase in crowler machines has made this less of a problem than it used to be).

Just my two cents and my opinion.

Yeah, I agree with @John_M, There wouldn't be a realistic way to put together a "must buy" list. Style differences, personal preferences, seasonality, packaging, and availability would be some of the things that would be too hard to get a consensus on.

This is my personal opinion, but Ex-Novo has been doing some really solid stuff since Jason took over a year or so ago. The food is definitely well above average for a pub also. I'd rank them in-line or above most in the "Other Highly recommended..." section above.

I plan on coming out there in June and doing the "Walk it off" pub crawl and a few other stops. I will only be there for a few days then I'm getting picked up and driving to Mobile, Alabama. Does anyone have some suggestions on where to stay in the city near those areas?

Yeah, that section is getting tough to manage. I initially picked the places on that list based on frequency of mentions in visiting Portland threads that existed before these "Visiting Portland" threads. But now, there are so many "second tier" (if you will) breweries, it's hard to determine who should/shouldn't be included.

AirBnB is probably your best bet, and a place in/near any of the areas on that pub crawl route would be good. People are sometimes concerned about safety, but there really aren't many places in Portland I'd consider unsafe, especially on that route. If AirBnB isn't your thing, I usually recommend the Jupiter Hotel. Close to a lot of stuff and usually reasonably priced. Plus, much easier & cheaper to park than downtown.
