After a five year absence, I'm heading back to RI for a visit and was wondering what the top options are these days. I feel like I moved just as things were starting to get big and am quite surprised at the number of breweries and options now (like being able to have a pint in a tap room at the brewery without requiring a tour). I'll be spending most of my time in south county, but a venture up to Providence would not be out of the question. So give me your favorite breweries, venues, and bottle shops.

Proc is your best bet down there.

Whalers is nice if you're okay with a good environment and slightly above average beer.

Head up to Providence and work your way back - Long Live, Buttonwoods, Proclamation.

Proc isn't down there anymore. They are up in Warwick. However, Shaidzon is in Proc'sold spot and you should DEFINITELY hit them up. If you make it to Providence, also hit up Long Live Beerworks. I have been critical of them in the past but they have upped their game recently. It's IPA's pretty much but they are all pretty damn tasty.

I haven't been to RI in a few years, but a friend has brought back some Tilted Barn a few times that I really enjoyed.

It's true, coming from Narragansett, it used to be a quick 20 minute shot out to the ol pallet fortress, but if you're coming to or from Providence area, it's super easy to shoot off and back on 95 in their new location. Still near the top of the list for RI places to hit.

I love Grey Sails taproom/outdoor space, it's one of the most unique beer related hangouts that I've been to

Bayberry Beer Hall. Pretty much right next to Long Live Beerworks.

Thanks for the info all. I'm not sure what we'll have time for, but definitely bookmarking Proclamation. A friend has recommended Shaidzon and Tilted Barn (but I think that's mostly because they're near to his house). We'll be heading to Pawcatuck to visit some friends, so I'll probably swing by Grey Sail and the Malted Barley (for old times' sake).

My wife heard that Bayberry's brunch was awesome but it's pretty unlikely that we'll be able to make brunch.

Another question: Are all (most) of these places amenable to kids in tow? Not sure of the laws regarding breweries.

Shaidzon and Tilted Barn allow kids. Tilted Barn is a farm and outdoors so there are some things for kids to see. That isn't bad for them. Shaidzon is just a tap room so not much for them to do but I don't believe it is an issue going there. Malted Barley is good for kids and Grey Sail has a really nice unique tap room / beer bar with an outdoor area that is fun and should be good for kids too. Bayberry is very kid friendly if you make it there.

Also, those two breweries may be close to your friend but both are outstanding. You will not go wrong with either. If you go to Tilted Barn, there are two lines, one for cans (the long one) and one for pours. If you just want to get pours, then do not wait in the longer line.

If you go to Pawcatuck you should consider hitting Beer’d in, I believe, Stonington. I think the big 3 in RI are Long Live, Tilted Barn, and Proclamation. I haven’t been to either Buttonwoods or Shaidzon but local buzz is pretty uniformly positive. Shaidzon just started canning and I hear Buttonwoods will begin cannng soon. Whalers has a nice space but I think the beer is not at the level of the others yet.

If you make it to Providence, stop by Ken's Ramen for some Pork Buns.

Beer'd is better than all (with proc, its 50/50) imo. When I'm not going that far proclamation, grey sail and Iggy's are my stops. You are doing yourself a disservice if you don't hit up some clam cakes and dip it in chowder in RI. Iggy's is the spot.

Buttonwoods is the mf-ing truth. Also FYI Malted Barley has a Providence location although I like Westerly better.

A wood fired pizza place just opened in the same mill complex as Beer'd, looks good and they deliver to the taproom.

Agreed with Iggy's, I take it for granted living in the same city but that place is great. There is a sit down restaurant next door with some of the same items as well as a few lobster dishes and maybe a Grey Sail beer on tap, however I like the food from the fast casual location better. Grab it from there and picnic on the beach or in the park.

If you must sit down to eat - go next door and BYOB all your new good beer to Aunt Carrie's

I was actually talking about the Warwick Iggy's location but yes, when in Narragansett the Iggy's there and Aunt Carrie's are nice.
