I'll be in the Joplin area (up from Texas) in a couple of weeks and planning to load up on quality stuff we can't get down here. Interested in what y'all recommend/is easy to find from Bell's, Founders, Firestone Walker, Goose Island, and Southern Tier. I have a list of what I'd like to find but I'm not really sure what's readily available in the area from these breweries, epecially Firestone Walker. I'll be in Wichita a few weeks later and plan on grabbing stuff from Odell, Hoppin Frog, and Tallgrass. Planning on grabbing some Schlafly AIPA on one of my trips as well assuming its been released. Thanks.
If you get to Springfield, Brown Derby has a pretty nice selection. A bit of a drive from Joplin though.
Springfield has a new micro called Mother's a gem in the Ozarks. Also they have Mueller's there which is a good place to eat and enjoy their brews. However the best beer in Missouri is Boulevard by far. Schlafly is a great Eastern Missouri brew. As for Kansas I really didn't care for Tallgrass as much. Kansas is a 3.2% state anyways. Nothing good comes from that. You are better of buying a Coke. Enjoy your trip out here. Make the effort to go to KC or Springfield. KC has great stores like Red X, Lukas and Gomers. The Brown Derby on National in Springfield is the main beer hub (close to the college).
3.2 was/is only in convience/grocery stores in KS. There areplenty of adult beers & bars to enjoy. Back before the 21 year old drinking law, there were bars that sold 3.2 beer (met my wife in one!) That's a thing of the past. I second Mother's I've liked most of their stuff on draft & in bottles.
Goebels oin Wichita is pricey, but best selection by far, the Anchor is good. If you are gonna be in Joplin consider hitting their sister store in Jane (caverena) for Macadoodles they have at least a 20% difference in beers offered. About 40 minutes away. Living in Oklahoma, I thank the Lord to be so close to the Mizzou border!
You can get Krebs, er Petes, er Choc Beer in Kansas (at least in Wichita) the Dubbel, Quad & Biere de Garde are nice. Thought give some love to an Oklahoma Brewery (don't think y'allget that south of the Red River, could be very wrong...
I understand about the liquor laws there however I have seen many mix ups by delivery drivers where 3.2 was delivered to a liquor store. Yes that sucks when you get home and find out.
If you buy micros and craft you don't have to worry about beer with training wheels. In Wichita Goebel (west side) is best, Global (NE) is 2nd. Both have 15% off micro and craft on Wednesday.
@ Kansas Beer Lover: Nice to know about the discount on Wednesday's, I am planning another trip to Witchita in the summer. My bf and I made a trip to all the Old Chicago's in Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri. Is there a min or max on the discount for the 15%?
Definitely visit our Macadoodle's! We do get some Firestone Walker here, including Reserve, Union Jack, and Double Jack (I've had the latter two - amazing standouts for both their respective categories and two of the best beers I've ever had). For Bell's, we get Two-hearted Ale (though I wasn't overly impressed with my batch of it) and, IIRC, Amber Ale (which I haven't had) - no Hopslam, sadly. We also have loads of stuff from Goose Island and Southern Tier, and quite a bit from Founders as well (love them, especially their Centennial IPA, which is still my favorite beer ever - available here along with their Double Trouble and Red's Rye, among a few others). From GI, I have had their IPA and brown ale, both of which were good (the brown borders on porter territory - very chocolatey). We also have lots of their Belgians, which I have yet to sample but plan on to soon since I like Belgian styles. ST is solid overall - have had their APA, IPA, and double IPA. Not sure if you get Boulevard (KC, MO brewery) down in Texas, but if not, almost anything by them is good as well, and easy to find at Mac's. You may also give the local Mother's brewery a shot - they are a new brewery in nearby Springfield, MO, and their IPA is surprisingly good (less a fan of their brown ale, Three Blind Mice, and their blond ale, Towhead).
I was just out in Western Missouri...Independence. A lot of history there, and I damn well noticed how cheap beer is there compared to Evansville, IN; where I'm residing. I'd expect that in St. Louis, but not western Missouri. Anyway, love to talk beer, so I thought I'd throw that in there. Missouri, what a beautiful place..!!
