Hey all, so Im from Omaha and am going to be making a weekend trip to Decorah IA to visit TG, question is would this be worth it? i.e. is there any advantage to going to the brewery vs a larger town in IA to try their beers? Finally, do they typically have a best time of year to go? Im not expecting KBBS and Mornin' Delight, just wondering if they sometimes have different harder to find beers on tap or just at brewery release? Thanks for any input

The advantage is you can taste their current, full line up and buy bottles and growlers. No other location has all of them on tap. They do have some harder to find ones on tap most of the time because they don't bottle everything they brew.

    Last list I saw.

    Dorothy's
    Naughty 90 (No Growler)
    pseudoSue
    Golden Nugget
    Rover Truck
    ZeeLander (No Growler)
    Tsunami Pale (No Growler)
    Murph's Irish Red

None of their super rare stuff but you won't find all of those on tap anywhere else in Iowa.

Going to TG is always a blast. Also, stop by the Courtyard & Cellar.

Thanks for the advice, anywhere else on the way I should stop too (if anyone has made this trip before)? coming from Omaha leaving Friday afternoon and returning Sunday. Thanks again for the input, I had my first taste of Psuedo Sue this past weekend at Darkness Day and it was amazing

according to a yelp review, seating is outside only and im assuming it will be too cold for that, are there any other suggestions or is this inaccurate? thanks again

It used to just be "The Courtyard" but they recently expanded into...well..the cellar of the building it was at, so there is additional indoor seating in the basement. I was just there this past weekend and it was a blast.

Pfff...like you'd remember any of that. @nilesschmidt if you are staying at the Quality Inn, I may have accidentally left my cat there. He's a big white cat, real friendly, and responds to the name Horatio. Just tell the front desk guy that 'ratio is your friend and he should be good to go.

I must also recommend Courtyard and Cellar - Nathan opened some great stuff for us. It eclipsed our TG experience, but I'll never complain about fresh Sue.

Is there a hotel close to TG, walking distance? Thanks!

There is a great restaurant in Decorah called Rubyiat. Andy the owner is a total beer geek and always has a stellar line up in both bottle and draft.

The closest is the Hotel Winnishiek.

On the way and/or coming back I always stop at either El Bait Shop or Zombie Burger (EBS more often than not, but I like Zombie Burger a lot too. I also stop at either the Fleur Hy-vee because it is fairly close to EBS and I stop at the Prairie Trail Hy-vee in Ankey because it is not far off my route.

You can also drive about an hour from Decorah to La Crescent, MN (it's a pretty drive too this time of year) and get some Surly and other things, then cross the bridge and you are in La Crosse, WI. Last time I was at Bodega, I got a pint of Serendipity for $6 :grinning:

When I used to live in Winona we'd drive down to Decorah just for Mabe's Pizza.

Winnishiek is a really nice, old hotel. It's right downtown. Rates are a little higher, but not outlandish. It's a pretty good walk to TG from there, but a motivated (read drunk) person would have no problem.

There's also a bed and breakfast just across the river from TG that would be a bit closer. I've not stayed there, but am told it's nice. http://www.leytzescorner.com/
