My wife and I are planning a visit to Brugge in the Fall, followed by a trip to Amsterdam. Is there a way to get to De Dolle via public transportation or does it require a rental car? I very much want to visit and we have structured our stay in Brugge so we can attend the English tour on a Sunday. Help and advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!
You can use the bus system, but time and availability depends on what day you go. Check the route planner https://www.delijn.be/en
When in Bruges, I'd definitely recommend going to brewery "De Halve Maan", brewers of Brugse Zot among others. Yet to visit it myself, but heard great stories about it from fellow beer-loving friends.
Native from Bruges speaking, "De Halve maan" is worthy of a visit, but if you are in Bruges on a Saturday I would recommend visiting 'Struise Brouwers'. You can't visit the brewery but their tasting on Saturday is an afternoon well spent.
The brewery is nice, 8 euro for a tour +1 pour. Only two beers on draft but oh the food... the best meal we had in Brugge. I'd skip the tour and go for lunch. It's in a very tourist-heavy area so expect some crowds.
Having been to Bruges a few times, I agree with this. As you can see from my avatar, Struise is always top of my list when in Belgium whether in Bruges for the shop or Oostvleteren for the school.
Wish I could, but we are most likely flying into Brussels on Saturday so I may hit Cantillon again, but it won't be possible to hit the Schoolhouse unfortunately I had to negotiate to be able to work out De Dolle as an option. I'll hit the shop in Brugge hopefully and may the Schoolhouse in the future.
My understanding is the the De Dolle English tour is on Sunday and the Schoolhouse is only open Saturday from 2pm to 6pm. Not sure I can angle for both on this trip.
Bumping this thread back up again as I'm leaving on Friday! The route planner was very helpful. That said, I'm going to lose almost an entire day for the tour - we leave Bruges on Tuesday for Amsterdam. Before I overcommit, can anyone tell me if they have any speciality bottles at the brewery or am I better served just using the time in Bruges and enjoying some oerbiers at the local establishments. I was also looking to bring back some cool De Dolle souvenirs. Thanks again for your time and patience
it's probably my favourite brewery to visit. hands down. Kris and Els are fucking characters. especially if they like you. the brewery's neat, Kris is a mad genius, his art's great and his beer's stellar. they have 3 taps, i think. arabier, oerbier and sometimes the stout, sometimes dulle teve. merch-wise, they have: 2 types of glasses biking shirt t-shirts baby clothes posters think that's it. food-wise, they have pate made from oerbier. it's great. i always suggest that you go there NOT by car and that you take your time. part of the charm is getting to know chris and the locals. and you'll leave there pretty damn loaded.
