I've never done it but I'm interested in doing so. In general what perks are there? The event in question entails many a brewer from overseas making their way to the area ... many of these brewers I would like to talk to. Thank for any input!
Well, when I worked with several other volunteers at a beer event, I was given time to walk around and try other beers. At the end of the night, once the guests were gone, we also shared more beer, and traded bottles and swag.
It depends on the event, but the few that I've done so far they typically have a designated time and area in which you can sample some beer and/or get a voucher for food. The one that I volunteer for every year has perks of getting in the event both days for free, a tshirt and backstage vip, which typically many of the brewer's and other volunteers are hanging out at. If anything volunteering is a great way to spread the good word!
Volunteering to spread the craft beer love is awesome. Good beer, good people and good times usually ensue. For you, the best bonus (beside the beer) may be 'many a brewer from overseas making their way to the area ... many of these brewers I would like to talk to'. As a volunteer you are not part of the exterior drunken masses, you are on the inside. Have fun!
I volunteer myself to be a volunteer at any and all beer events. PS the cuts on my gums are NOT from sucking beer taps
