I recently made so trades for some of my voodoo collection for some easier to get beers. My buddy that got me into craft beer thinks i am crazy for doing this stating that I should hold off on trading them right now. One of the big reasons I did the trades is to get some trades done since I am fairly new to Beer Advocate. So my question is do you think I did the wrong thing by trading them in first place or did right thing by trying to get into the trading scene.Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

If both of you are happy then it is a good trade.

I think as long as you're happy with the beers that you got it really doesn't matter. I traded to get some of the BA voodoo beers and I'm certain that both sides of the trade are very happy. Beer Karma generally works out in the long run.

Don't hold them hostage, these beers are awesome and I wish I had a case to spread the love.

That being said, you can probably ask for something a bit more elusive than "easy to get beers". Don't feel like you have to trade rare beers to get started either. You're from PA. You could EASILY trade some Nugget Nectar to people who don't get Troegs, or trade locals for locals.

Just to help gauge the trade value, I've seen Voodoo bottles go for:
    -Churchill's Finest Hour
    -BA Alesmith stuff
    -BA Perennial stuff

So there is a good trade value if you want something along those lines.

Just do what makes you happy!

Furthermore, you have contributed to a more reasonable trading culture. New traders like you are sorely needed in this community. Your friend is setting a bad example.

These are the types of bottles that win you long-term trade partners. It's your beer to do what you want with, but you tend to make out better in the long run by not asking for the world for things.

So yes, if you're trying to get into the trading scene, then you did good by trading them reasonably.

I've sent a couple out to good trade partners or people I knew wanted them bad, plus the glassware. The others I've shared with friends who couldn't make the release. The last three BM variants I own will be shared with friends or my face. Seriously these beers are that good. They should go for other limited brewery only releases IMO. I would offer one of my Chocolate Rains for any two BM variants, and consider that a pretty even deal.

I already made 2 trades but if they don't turn into regular trade partners then I feel as if I shouldn't have traded them away. These beers are fantastic some of the best I've had but I did buy an extra allotment for that reason.
I just hope I'm getting enough back for what I gave up. Thanks for all the info.

Sounded like you did the right thing, but now I am not so sure...

Trading used to be about getting beers you wanted to try for beers you have. ( what it sounded like you did )
Now it is all about maximizing profit and winning. ( now what it sounds like you did )

Your last statement sounds like you will feel bad you traded beers you had for beers you wanted if you do not "win" a trade in future because of it.

I'd be kind of pissed if I traded with you and possibly hooked you up with amazing extras, or was planning to hook you up in another trade later because of your generosity only to read your last post.

Just my opinion though, I hope I got your tone wrong.

What I meant by it was if I don't trade again with the people not by winning the trade. I don't think I won a trade at all. But if the people I traded with don't want to trade again I feel I wasted my time. I probably could have got way more then what I got but the guys I traded with seem like good trading partners. Sorry you misunderstood my last post.

I sincerely hope you don't get 'more'. Buying an entire extra allotment of a brewery only release has always stood out as a douchebag move to me and many, many others.

only got an extra allotment hours after original release and they had a raffle for the right to buy another allotment. So if that is a douchebag move then you will have to forgive me.

I think the main issue with this thread is that it is another example of people failing to formulate their own opinion on beer trading and beer in general. Rather than taking what your friend said about your trade at face value and getting into a mild panic, perhaps it would be best to consider whether or not you were happy with the experience. If you were, then there should be little left to say on the matter. I'm not saying that you're incapable of forming your own opinion, rather in this case you may not have stopped to do so before running to the forum. In the end, what you think is really all that matters when it comes to the relative value of beers you trade away. There is no right or wrong answer.

Just enjoy what you received in turn for your bottles and take comfort in the fact that you may have hooked someone up big time depending on what they sent you. If they have any sense of common courtesy I'm sure they'll pay you back in kind down the road.

right after the release i swapped for some of these and even got tossed one as a throw in on a glass swap (lookin at you Shilt, won't soon forget that kindness!!!)...i've been rapidly drinking the one's i've managed to get ahold of and would love to get the ones i missed and score additional bottles of the ones i've tried, but for some reason, they are really hard to shake out interest on from people these days.

i'm offering brewery only and limited stuff for them since that seems to be the going rate, but right now the big problem is finding someone who wants to trade them. if anyone has some that they'd trade, i'm definitely willing to toss some cool beers your way. would love to land the brandy BM and the other BM variants. really dig those.

I recently had a great experience with this. HoppyKilaMonster who attended the release included a PVW BM in a BIF box that he sent to me. Just got done working out a trade with him for some more. I feel that he let them go very reasonably and I for one will be the first to send him limited releases from MN when he is looking for one without asking for much in return. As has been said before, developing relationships and good beer karma pays off far more in the long run then nabbing that CFH or whatever it is you trade for.

"Sometimes when you win, you really lose, and sometimes when you lose, you really win, and sometimes when you win or lose, you actually tie, and sometimes when you tie, you actually win or lose. Winning or losing is all one organic mechanism beer trade, from which one extracts what one needs" - Gloria Clemente

On the other hand, if I recall that soliloquy correctly, it ends with Woody Harrelson leaving a hot, willing, voluptuous, accentually-challenged Latina partially dressed, in bed, coyly demanding sexual satisfaction. Which in my mind means, the Woodster really lost.

All of the BBVD bottles were 1 per person (unless you had a mule or something). I know personally, I am not going to trade away something that I haven't even drank myself. As far as the ones we did get multiples of, many above me have said it. Many people hooked up friends/regular trading partners with the extra bottle.

What I'm trying to say is that I have no interest in trading any of mine, and I'm sure many others feel the same way.
