So my wife and I are considering taking a trip from NW Ohio to Vermont in late summer/early fall for our 5th anniversary. I'm trying to get some preliminary cost estimates. We're looking to do some hiking and outdoorsy type things while there. Obviously I'd like to pick up at least some Heady and HF but our trip won't be entirely centered around getting beer. Although we will probably spend an evening or two in a bar if we can find some good stuff on tap. I've done some searching on this forum and I've perused the IPA Highway website but I wanted to get some other recommendations for relatively inexpensive B&Bs, cabins, or cottages in the area that would be nearish to decent bars and outdoors scenery. They don't necessarily have to all be near Waterbury or HF as we'll likely be spending a night or two in different places. We have also considering trying to make a trip to Maine for a day or day/night. Is this doable? Any good places in Maine I should look into?
Apparently the Made INN Vermont provides their guests with a welcome brew upon arrival, often Heady. http://madeinnvermont.com/amenities2/
My wife and I used to do the Air B&B thing and (if the people staying were beer geeks) then we'd take them out to local pubs or give them some Heady (if I had any in fridge). There's some pretty nice ones around Vermont, in addition to regular B&Bs. Just be warned, there's a few that's not so nice. If going to Maine, I'd recommend Portland. There's some great breweries and brewpubs in that area.
Vermont state parks are awesome and one of the few things the state does well. They have tent sites, lean to's, cabins and even two bedroom cottages at most state parks. Book early. Funny VT story, I called in early April to book a cabin for late May. I reserved the cabin in Waterbury and the man on the phone asked for payment in full- I don't get paid to the end of the month and asked the guy if I can call back then and pay and he said "sure". No many states would do that for you. http://www.vtstateparks.com/htm/cabinscottages.htm
I must give credit where credit is due. Not only does VT have one of the best state park systems in the world, they do have the best Department of Motor Vehicle website and policies in the World- you can do most anything on-line. I highly recommend Little River State Park in Waterbury and don't rule on the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe.
It's not bad in person either; never waited more than 20 minutes at the Montpelier DMV office. And you don't wait in line. Grab a number and a magazine and hit the couch until they call for you. Quite different from my last home in Utah where you waited in line, often in the hot sun out the door, for 60-90 minutes. Registration is cheap here too, about half what it costs in most states.
May I suggest you do the work on line. Last time I was in the VT DMV office I had to sit next to two guys who haven't seen each other since the big house.
Did they have a romantic reunion? I usually do it online, as in renewing my registration on Wednesday... got my stickers today, but in-person is required for enhanced licenses, etc. And the Montpelier office is about a 2-3 minute walk to Threepenny...
