At the same time? Or one right after the other? Or on a different day?

Batch #1 was purchased and milled in the same manner 2 weeks prior to batch #2. In BOTH instances, both of the grains used were milled together.

My recommendation would be to mix the wort well and draw another sample.

I'd planned on doing just that this morning, just as soon as I finish this cup of coffee.

Sounds like you didnt get it all mixed up well enough when you topped up.

Which brings up the question, why are you adding water pre boil and post boil? Why not calcuate the correct amount pre boil, and find out how much you boil off and get with kettle/trub loss and add that back to your pre boil volume from the start. You wont have to top up anything, or dilute your wort.

+1. When I finish lautering, I take a pre boil gravity reading. This helps me evaluate whether a normal boiloff will get me where I want to be. If it will concentrate the wort too much, I'll add more water. If it will result in a low gravity, may boil longer to concentrate the wort to a desirable level. Or I may add some DME.

New theory...GoldPils is "new'' name for Vienna malt made by Briess, but minimum wage employee :slight_frown: at LHBS grabbed the Briess Carapils instead of the intended one. If Briess is like some other maltsters, all their grain comes in the same bag (with different boxes checked).

I always over boil a little bit in order to consistently hit my OG. I add back water based on a volume and gravity measurement taken at the end of the boil. I'm usually +/- 1 point from target.

FWIW: Evidently Briess is still making a 6 row Vienna (130 Lintner)...and the 2 row "GoldPils" Vienna (80 Lintner)

Are you sure that you mixed this water into the wort well before taking your hydrometer sample? Because if not then that's why your reading was so low.
