has anyone used wakatu hops before, if so what’s the best way to use them? Getting ready to make a new IPA or Pale Ale was trying to figure out how to use them. My current hops I’m gonna use are Simcoe, cascade, and centennial.

The parentage is Hallertau, but its known for giving primarily citrus/lime aromas. I've used it in an all NZ hopped IPA beer with Motueka and it was okay. IMHO, if you are trying to tweak your beer further towards citrus, then go ahead with Wakatu. Personally, I don't like to use more than two hops in a beer (occasionally three if they are ones I use a lot) because once you have 3 or 4 hops in a beer it becomes difficult to determine what each of them are contributing. If you've already made the same beer with Simcoe, Cascade, and Centennial, then you'd be able to tell the difference swapping one out with Wakatu or just adding it in. If not, and you are just throwing the blend together, I'm not sure how I'd be able to tell what's what in the final product.

I'm totally with you on that, although with citrusy hops I think you can get away with a little more mixing than usual. Still, I find that two or three always works better than more.

With that said, I have had a beer planned for some time that utilizes Wakatu because I'm looking for that lime note but I haven't been able to find any! I'm curious to find out how much lime there is, and how much other citrus is there, and what that's like (lemon, orange, grapefruit, etc.).

Looking forward to hearing more on this one.

Welcome to the BA site, Mitchypoo. Your question should be asked in the Homebrewing forum, but here is a link that I did of a search of that forum asking for all uses in various threads of 'wakatu'. Hopefully there is some good info there for you.

    Jim,

I am uncertain what quantity you are looking to buy but this hop is available from MoreBeer:

    Cheers!

Thanks Jack, yes we buy from them, but I think in that case it's a matter of cost. I will push for it though as soon as the chance to throw that beer into rotation comes around.

The last beer I brewed with wakatu had a fairly pronounced vanilla flavor and I was thinking it would be great in a milkshake ipa. Could probably skip the expensive vanilla beans. Looking back at my recipe it was a 10 minutes addition that gave me the vanilla.

Interesting, good to know it can have a vanilla affect. There’s not much info out there about these hops. Thanks for the info
